Dutta
Dutta (also spelled Datta and Dutt), is an Indian family name and surname found primarily amongst Assamese, Bengalis and Punjabis. The name is derived from the word Aditya, which means sun in Sanskrit.
Assamese
In Assamese community, Dutta surname commonly refers to the people who are Hindus by faith and belong to the general-caste, though non-brahmins. Dutta(s) of Upper - Assam are basically Kalitas [(as generally referred in Assam), see; Kalitas of Assam], who worship saints of Assamese community such as; Shankardev (see; Srimanta Sankardeva) Madhavdev etc., and thus do not engage themselves in idol worship unlike traditional Hindus. Dutta(s) of Lower - Assam are Kshatriyas or Kaaith as spelled in Kamrupi language (see; Kayastha); coming from the older name of Assam i.e. Kamrup. They worship idol of Goddess "Kamakhya", who's temple is situated in Nilachal mountain (see; Kamakhya Temple) in Guwahati. An alternative spelling of this surname, as Datta; is also followed and written among other Assamese people.
Bengalis
Bengali Dattas (Template:Lang-bn Dôtto) are kshatriyas (Template:Lang-bn khotrio), in the ancient times the most profitable business of gold marchentery could not be in the hands any Kshatriya. So they created a sub sect 'Kayastha'. Primarily they were the warriors.From ancient pal dynasty they had major role in the battle field.They were famous for their archery qualities, and they had really a good hand with sword.Before and during the English period some of them were Jaminders and some were samants. Recent history also shows that this courageous kshatriya community has proved them selves as a martial community in army and in paramilitary forces. Some Duttas are also baidyas (vaid brahmin), in which case they may also use the compound surname Duttagupta or Duttasharma. And also some of duttas belong to MODAK community (maximun of them are found in western region of west bengal) , they use their surname as Dutta Modak.
Since the Partition of India in 1947, Bengali Duttas have resided primarily in the state of West Bengal, Tripura in India and Sylhet in Bangladesh.

Punjabis
Punjabi Duttas are a clan of the Mohyal Brahmins. According to the Gotra system, they are the descendants of Rishi Bharadwaj, the same as the Duttas from Bengal. Some consider Gaj Bhavan, the grandson of Rishi Bharadwaj to be the real founder of their clan.
