Ken Marschall (born October 28, 1950)[1] is an American painter and illustrator notable for his paintings of famous ocean liners, such as the RMS Titanic, RMS Lusitania, and the HMHS Britannic. His paintings have been used in many books about the Titanic, most notably his depictions of the sinking, of which no photographs that could be used were taken.[2]
He has served as consultant to many documentaries about the Titanic,[2] including James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss (in which he also appeared as J. Bruce Ismay), as well as a consultant to Cameron's 1997 film and the two-part A&E Titanic television specials Death of a Dream and The Legend Lives On.
The following information may seem unnecessary, but as a number of Mr. Marschall's fans could be unaware of this, I thought the reader would like to know. On pages 6 and 7 of the 1998 book "Ken Marschall's Art of Titanic", Ken dedicates this compilation of his paintings to his "devoted partner" Vern, "who makes it all so easy for me." While this could mean a business partner, the word "devoted" seems to imply a romantic relationship. And since Vern is a very masculine name, it appears that Ken Marschall could be a homosexual. But as this is the only reference I could find to Mr. Marschall's partner, it could be possible that I am wrong, and if so I would gladly retract this statement as a mistake if someone with better knowledge of Ken Marschall, who is without a doubt the finest maritime painter of the modern age, would edit my contribution to this article.
