He left home, aged 16 to join the Royal Air Force as an Armourer. He served with 237 O.C.U. on Buccaneers and Hunters at R.A.F.Honinton and R.A.F.Akrotiri before being posted to R.A.F.Laarbruch in 1983,aged just 18, where he was deployed on XV Squadron when the new Panavia Tornadoes took the place of Buccaneers.

He was known then as "Chrissy Boy" on account of being the youngest airman on the newly formed squadron. The moniker was bestowed on him by another armourer friend called Bullit. During a three year period (1983-1986) he spent time on various overseas detachments and took part in all major exercises of that era. A keen interest in sport, playing squash, five-a-side football, volleyball, athletics, swimming and waterpolo, which kept him busy when he wasn't carousing in one of many bars.
