Joe Aston is an Australian business and current affairs journalist. He is known as one of Australia's most successful 'business gossip columnists'.[1][2][3]
Career
[edit]Aston is known for his career writing for the Rear Window column in the Australian Financial Review, which ended in 2023 after 12 years of publication.[3][4] The opinion column garnered a sizeable readership as his writing was characterised by very brazen and critical language.[5] He often went after figures in politics, business and media, though some attacks attracted defamation cases against him.[6]
Reporting on Qantas
[edit]He gained headlines in 2023 for writing about then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce, and his leadership of the airline.[7] Amidst Aston's consistent negative headlines and other media reporting, Joyce later resigned the same year.[8] In 2024, Aston released a book about his reporting on Qantas, entitled The Chairman's Lounge.[9]
Personal life
[edit]Aston now resides in Los Angeles, California.[10] He previously lived in Sydney, Australia.[10]
He married in 2022, reportedly at the home of media businessman James Packer.[11]
