English: The horrific news of Lincoln's assassination shocked not only America, but the entire civilised world. Those who desire the betterment of mankind cannot fail to feel pain at the sad event which has snatched from the living the greatest man of the most recent pages of world history, at the very zenith of his glory. In issue 19 of our paper, we published a short biography of the late President of the United States of America, and we also covered the sad event itself, but now as we present Lincoln's portrait, let us also briefly outline his public service. Before the presidential election of 1860, the existing Wigh and Democratic parties had undergone a gradual transformation, the former now calling themselves Republicans and demanding the final abolition of slavery, while the latter wanting to extend it still further. The abolition of slavery, moreover, was a matter of life and death for the republic, which, being founded on the principles of liberty and humanity, could no longer tolerate slavery, the very opposite of these principles. Lincoln was well aware of the crisis the Union had reached since he took office, and declared in one of his speeches that no president since Washington had had such a difficult job.
