Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | Tolkien, a philologist, was intensely interested in the evolution of families of languages. The "Tree of Tongues" shows the stage of language development Tolkien had reached by 1937 when he drafted the Lhammas. This detail shows how sharp his conception was, how much attention he gave it, and crucially that he was still thinking that Noldorin was the language of Gondolin, i.e. the Noldor Elves who had come to Beleriand. As the cited text in the article explains, he soon afterwards drastically revised his language schema, making the Noldor adopt Sindarin, the native language of Beleriand, and rendering the Lhammas as written obsolete. |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
This is the exact diagram discussed in the text, hand-drawn by Tolkien. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | This image is used only in this one article. It is the only non-free image in the article (indeed it is the only image of any kind right now). It is cropped from the original, and is used much reduced at the usual pitiful thumbnail scale. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
It's quite unlikely at this distance in time from the work's publication in 1987, the technicality of the image, and the fact that only a cropped detail has been used. |
