This is a list of things named after Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States. This list includes proposed name changes.

Organisms

[edit]

Biota

[edit]

Barack Obama has been commemorated in the scientific names of at least 14 species, the most of any U.S. president.[1][2]

Animals

[edit]

However, the genus name Obama (flatworm)[8] and in particular the invasive species Obama nungara[9] were not named after Barack Obama. The name "Obama" in this case is a coincidence and is derived from the Tupi language (which is spoken in the same area where the flatworm was discovered) where it comes from the words "oba" ("leaf") and "ma" ("animal"), which is a reference to the body shape of species in this genus.[8]
