Talk:Troops of Horse Guards

I've been paging through the Gazette and the Horse Guards seems to have used pretty arcane ranks, see for example http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveViewFrameSetup.asp?webType=0&PageDuplicate=x0%20%20%20%20%20%20&issueNumber=11133&pageNumber=0&SearchFor=War-Office&selMedalType=&selHonourType=

Could someone explain? Fornadan (t) 23:51, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Corporals

[edit]

I recently posted a link to the London Gazette at Talk:Brigadier which would suggest the Horse Guards did not use the rank of Corporal, instead using Brigadier. There is also no citation for the assertion that the current use of Corporal (rather than Sergeant) in the Household Cavalry derives from the Troops of Horse Guards. The link referred to above shows the same thing. "No. 11133". The London Gazette. 9 April 1771. Opera hat (talk) 14:28, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at Cannon's Historical record of The Life Guards: containing an account of the formation of the corps in the year 1660 and of its subsequent services to 1836 (http://www.archive.org/stream/cihm_48384#page/n5/mode/2up) around page 43 in the microfilm (13 in the original text). Also Standing orders for the first regiment of Life Guards, page 35 et seq. (available in Google books). Wally Wiglet (talk) 00:07, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also Sir Reginald Hennel's The history of the King's body guard of the yeomen of the guard, page 155-6 (also in Google Books). Wally Wiglet (talk) 00:58, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
