Template talk:Ordinaries of the Diocese of Hong Kong
The problem...
[edit]The problem with naming this template "Ordinaries..." is that auxiliary bishops, and bishops who served as priests here, are not ordinaries of the diocese, strictly speaking, so they would be omitted. If we name it "Bishops of the Diocese" then we naturally omit the priests that came before elevation to diocesan status. Can't win, huh? I would support a rename back to the original name and just abuse it to add priests who weren't bishops, being the more accurate description. Elizium23 (talk) 08:27, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- Actually, the term "Ordinaries" is more specific than "Bishops". Bishops would indeed encompass coadjutors, auxiliaries (current and former), as well as priests who served previously. On the other hand, there can only be one Ordinary of a diocese. But that term is used to encompass all heads of what is now the Diocese of Hong Kong before it became a diocese (i.e. they bishops of titular sees, but not of Hong Kong). —Bloom6132 (talk) 11:24, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- Not to mention, all other major archdiocese templates (e.g. Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, etc.) use the term "Ordinaries". Again, this is not done to encompass auxiliaries and priests who became bishops elsewhere, but to encompass those who were not an archbishop but still the head of what is now the archdiocese. —Bloom6132 (talk) 11:30, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
