Styles

[edit]

Hi Michael, welcome to the wiki. I notice that you have added some prenomial styles to a few articles. Just so you are aware, this is a touchy subject around here, with many people outright opposed to their inclusion in the first line of the article, rather than mentioned later on. In anycase, the prenomial stylists seem to have prevailed for the moment, but there are still a few guidlines. First, the bolded part of the title should really only be the article title, or something that might reasonably be a redirect — so don't bold Honorable, or the postnomial initials, etc. Also, simple courtesy titles like professor, or Mr. are generally not included. Also, don't put wiki links within parts of the title that are bolded. So Sir Wombat Twitworth, not Sir Wombat Twitworth. Note that Sir is a bit of a special case, as it formally becomes part of the persons name, and so does tend to be bolded but not linked. Again, welcome! Fawcett5 16:46, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Titles

[edit]

I've noticed you added the title 'Sir' to the 1st Duke of Wellington's article, which was reverted by the admin Proteus. Please note that a 'Duke' is higher in rank than a 'Knight' therefore the 'Sir' is no longer used in his title. 62.252.96.16 00:50, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please also note that "Sir" does not always signify a knighthood--Pakington was a baronet, not a knight. Mackensen (talk) 20:59, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia style

[edit]

I see that you have been modifying a number of articles to add prenomials and postnomials. You should probably check out the Manual of Style, which says:

If possible, make the title the subject of the first sentence of the article (as opposed to putting it in the predicate). In any case, the title should appear as early as possible in the article — preferably in the first sentence.
The first time the title is mentioned in the article, put it in bold using three apostrophes. Here's an example: article title produces article title. You should not put links in the title.

Since "The Honourable", "PC", "MP", "BA", "CC", LLB" and so on, are not part of the article title, they should not be in bold. This is not my preference: this is part of the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

This is why so many of your previous edits have been modified. I hope that you will adhere more closely to the prefered guidelines in the future, now that you know. I hope this helps. Thanks, Ground Zero | t 21:32, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also, according to Wikipedia style, words in sub-headings, other than the first word, are not capitalized unless they would be capitalized in an ordinary sentence, so: "External links", not "External Links". Following Wikipedia style helps maintain a visually consistent encyclopedia, and reduces the workload for other editors. Thanks. Ground Zero | t 21:45, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Order of Merit

[edit]

No one is a "recipient" of the Order of Merit because it is an Order (rather self-evidently), not an award. You'd know this if you'd actually read about it. Your category is fundamentally wrong. Proteus (Talk) 17:50, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm responding to your request at third opinion. Just as a guess, the Category renaming seems to have been handled improperly. However, there doesn't seem to be any obvious place to go for help with the problem. "Third opinion" doesn't get a lot of attention. You might want to try the admin noticeboard, but I am neither an admin nor have a perfect understanding of procedure, so that may not be appropriate. I'm leaving the Third Opinion request up. Hope this gets sorted out. Jkelly 04:17, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Parliament Biographies

[edit]

Hi Micael,

Just a quick heads up that instead of adding the Political Biographies with:

You can do it instead with the following convenient template:

{{Subst:Parlbio|ID=1991}}

Notice that the language inserted is now a little bit different, but there were some complaints about the fact that the information there is not really a biography, and it included only the persons federal political experience and not any colonial, provincial, or municipal experience. Please feel free to substitute the new template for the old language whereever you see it, just keep the ID numbers the same... Cheers, Fawcett5 17:35, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

categories and their sub-cats

[edit]

Hello. just wanted to point out that the convention on wiki is to not include an article in a category where it is also in that category's sub-category. (for instance where Christopher Plummer is already catted under Category:Torontonians he need not and conventionally is not be catted under Category:People from Ontario). the idea is to keep both the length of individual cats from becoming too long and to keep the number of cats per article at a reasonable length. (my little wiki hobby is catting pages better, by the way). regards, -Mayumashu 04:05, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The category Category:Historical Members of the Canadian House of Commons is in the process of being replaced by smaller and more manageable subcategories. Could you please not readd it to the articles that I'm removing it from? Thanks. Bearcat 21:25, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As the College isn't one of its own former members, why have you added it to the former members Category? The Category page already has a link to the College's article. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:46, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You keep re-adding this, without bothering to respond to my question, and without even giving edit summaries. Given that it's incorrect, I can only keep removing it. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:49, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You're quite right, they're wrong too. I've changed all of them; if you come across any others, please let me know. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:54, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

But there is a link on the page (though for some reason it was in slightly the wrong place; I've moved it), just as there is on most articles about Oxford Colleges. That's precisely what I was arguing — a link on the page rather than an incorrect category. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:39, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Senators

[edit]

Michael, "Senator" is a job title. I do not believe that ex-Senators continue to use the title. In any event, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) does not indicate that this sort of title should be in opening of the article. The US presidential articles, e.g., Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, do not have "President" before the names even though former presidents continue to use the title. Even George W. Bush does not have "president" even though he is still president. Regards, Ground Zero | t 17:57, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn

[edit]

I notice that you added in the style The Most Noble to Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. Please do not add in styles. WP policy as and from August this year is that styles should never be used in articles. Instead a style box is used to define royal styles in the text. FearÉIREANN 01:21, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure Michael. Its in WP:MOSBIO. Right now it only applies to royalty. Previously a bitter edit war had erupted over whether to use styles in royal articles. (It was one of the worst edit wars in WP history and spread over large numbers of articles.) I proposed a compromise which to my amazement won 95% agreement from all sides. Basically how it works is that styles feature in articles (keeping the styles side happy) but not at the top (keeping the anti-styles people happy). Instead a styles template is added into each article listing the diplomatic style, alternative style and spoken style used. As a result styles have been deleted by all sides from all articles on royalty and the template installed. It is now an automatic formula that is used. Where styles appear in articles they are instantly deleted by whomever finds them, and replaced by the template (an infobox). You'll see the format in the above page, the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies). I hope that clarifies matters. FearÉIREANN 15:32, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Academic post-nominals

[edit]

It's not Wikipedia practice. Go and look at a few articles and you'd see that quite clearly. And I don't really care what you think is advisable, it's not your own personal article. Proteus (Talk) 21:51, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oxbridge MA ...isn't a 'real' degree, being just a long-service award on top of a BA. So the MA subsumes the BA (you don't hold both at once I think) Bob aka Linuxlad 00:39, 5 January 2006 (UTC) (and I was quite happy to just stay with the BA thanks :-))[reply]

I marked this {{cfd}} only because it had no parent category and it looked like it had been discarded in favor of the other category. I have removed my cfd and assume that you are working things out with User:Proteus. -- Emact 23:09, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Michael, it was me that removed the MP categories, sorry about that, I see they are for past and present members. Thanks for putting them back. Doesn't a person lose the title 'Honourable' however once they leave parliament? I'm pretty sure they do but can't find anything specifically stating the situation. -- Blorg 09:26, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did some more research, I see she keeps it as a member of the Privy Council. I've included that info in the article. -- Blorg 09:57, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories again

[edit]

You've suddenly re-added the inaccurate categories which we discussed some time ago (see above). I've removed them again; please don't re-add them. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:04, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

academic degrees

[edit]

I don't think it is usual to include academic degrees (e.g. Ph.D.) in the first line of a biographical article. I don't know what the policy is for honorary degrees, but it is certainly not conventional for academic degrees (see, e.g., Bill Frist, Rush D. Holt, Jr., Rashid Sunyaev, Linus Pauling...) I have removed your addition to the John Kenneth Galbraith article. –Joke 17:50, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been cleaning up uncategorized articles and noticed you had removed some of my changes.

Why is this? If you know of a better place for them, please let me know. -- ProveIt (talk) 01:22, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am wondering why you changed the category I created Category:Stanley Cup champions to Category:Stanley Cup Champions. I worked rather hard for a long to to add names to that category, and now I am not even credited in the history of the page. Please respond on my talk page. thanks. Michael Drew 01:17, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This category was Category:Stanley Cup Champions, I renamed it to Category:Stanley Cup champions after processing a Speedy Category Rename Request. As there were several edits to the original category, I listed attributions for the original category, including yourself, on the new talk page. All links to the category have been updated, so the work you did in categorizing the articles still exists. As category pages can not be moved like other pages, it is not possible to merge the edit histories on them, this the reason I posted the attributions on the talk page. In doing so I believe I've fufiled the GFDL attribution requirements. If you think this is a licensing violation, please let me know ASAP. Otherwise, I hope my reply here clears things up, if not please reply back! — xaosflux Talk 14:20, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Capital letters

[edit]

Hey Michael, I have been noticing alot of new hockey player pages you have been creating and that is great! However, many of your articles are using captial letters incorrectly. "He" and "His" don't need a captial "H" in the middle of a sentence. You've done this on Gerry Ehman, Bill Dineen (ice hockey), and Larry Hillman among others. Also, you have failed to use commas where needed. You can see some of the corrections I've made on Steve Black. I'm just trying to make Wikipedia a better place for everyone with articles that are clearly defined and readable. Please check punctuation and spelling before submitting the final page and feel free to check out the Manual of Style. But good work and good research on the articles you've written! Thanks! --Schmackity 15:11, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Walter "Gunzo" Humeniuk

[edit]

Hey Michael Drew, found this info on Walter (sometimes Wally) and thought you could use it. Not sure why he was called "Gunzo". The first link is here with info in the about section. Also found this .pdf that has info and a award that is given out as the "Gunzo" award. It also says the "late" Walter Humeniuk, but I couldn't find a date for when he passed away. That .pdf is here, an the article is about three pages down. Also found out he was inducted into the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame in a (long-loading) .pdf here Hope this helps! --Schmackity 14:03, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Butch Keeling

[edit]

Hi, can you please change the name of the Keeling article back to Melville "Butch" Keeling? I am well aware that Melville was his real name but he was well known by the nickname Butch. I have spoken about him with his sister (who is still alive) and she confirms that. Also, if you look at his gravestone (a picture of it is accessible through the sixth reference link on the Keeling page) you will see that even there he is listed as Melville "Butch" Keeling. Thank you in advance for taking care of this.JonJax 21:42, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think it would be an adequate move. With Melville Keeling and Butch Keeling as redirects, have the article as Melville "Butch" Keeling. DMighton 08:03, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oops. You're right. I put Jean Beliveau's stats with Billy Bell's name. Beliveau is right above Bell in the list of retired players in the NHL Guide and Record Book. I'll go ahead and change it. Bigdottawa 04:23, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Sylvestre?

[edit]

Hello Michael Drew. I am wondering why Father Charles Sylvestre would be listed with the article on Deaths in 2007. What is the criteria for adding people like him, i.e., people who did very bad things and went to jail (in this case sentenced to serve three years). I don't disagree with adding him to the Deaths article, but I just wonder why he qualifies. Perhaps in this case, you listed him with the Deaths just because of his notoriety. Here's part of my confusion: recently, a Death listing for Jennifer Strange, the lady who died last week of water poisoning as a result of a radio contest, was deleted and then re-added from the Deaths article; there was confusion whether she was considered a worthy listing. How do we know whether someone should be listed or not? Que-Can 17:59, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2002 Stanley Cup Engravings

[edit]

Hey Micheal Drew, first off I found info about Bill Tibbs from your last question. Here is his info on Hockey Database. Looks like he was a backup goalie to Sawchuck and maybe just called up for a game or two. Also found this: In the team-by-team sections, there is a one- or two-sentence explanation of every person whose name is on the Stanley Cup. The 2001-2002 Detroit Red Wings included Nancy Beard's name. She was a secretary in the team's offices. at the end of an article here about Nancy Beard.

As for your question about the engraving on the cup, I found this site with "Cup-winning rosters" but I think this might just be people on the ice when they won. I'm still looking for a picture of the 2001-02 Detroit Red Wings engraving on the cup as I'm sure there are more people than those listed on the site I gave you. Let me know if there are any other ways I can help! --Schmackity 15:18, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HHOF members

[edit]

Hey, thanks for your help and cleanup of my recent HHOF member articles. I just created an article for Al Leader and was a bit frustrated trying to find information about his birth city in Manitoba. There seem to be articles here for everything down to the "village" level in Manitoba, but I can't find anything on Barnsley, Manitoba. Know anything about it? --Mus Musculus 15:59, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I will try to remember to add articles to the New Articles section. This is the first WikiProject I've contributed to that has that feature, so I'm still getting used to it. If I have a specialty, it is probably the history of fighting and enforcers in hockey. I have read a lot about the subject. Other than that, I just look up information on whatever I need and I am good at finding citations. Mus musculus is the scientific name for a house mouse - it was more or less a random anonymous name choice. --Mus Musculus 20:09, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter

Dear Michael Drew! You are receiving this newsletter because you have signed up as a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey. The purpose of this newsletter is to update on the goings on of the project, as there have been major changes, and a lot of new recognized content in the past few weeks. If you are an inactive user, you probably won't recognize the new and improved state of the WikiProject!

From the project, Maxim.

There have been a lot more Good and Featured articles written in the past few weeks. Here is a list:[1][2][3][4]

Featured articles

Notes
  1. ^ All articles are in order of promotion, as written on the main WikiProject page; FA's have official dates of promotions.
  2. ^ A star represents a featured article or list
  3. ^ A green circle represents a good article
  4. ^ Stanley Cup is an A-Class article

Article Improvement

By Maxim

Upon some discussion on the WikiProject talk page, the Article Improvement Drive page was revamped by Krm500 and Maxim. It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status.

Diacritics

By Maxim

In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt.

Task forces

By Maxim
There have been two new task forces started within the WikiProject to coordinate major topics.

Sweden Ice Hockey task force

This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES.

New Jersey Devils task force

This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock.

Requested Images

By Maxim
After discussion on the WikiProject talk page, Serte created a page for Requested Images. The page encourages users to license images for use on articles. The page also has section to request images for players, arenas, game situations, miscellaneous, and team and league logos. The page has been quite popular; since it was created on July 21, there have been six completed requests. There are four currently outstanding requests:

Article assessement completed

By Maxim
On July 12, Kaiser matias announced that he had completed assessing all the articles with a {{ice hockey}} tag, sorting them into Category:Unassessed Ice Hockey articles. Kaiser matias has ranked about 9000 articles in that category, and most were stubs, and "have no information at all", according to him. Everybody is encouraged to expand the stubs into real articles. This effort took around 5 months. A big thanks goes to Kaiser matias from me and all the project.

  2. ^ At the time of publishing, there were 5 lists at WP:FLC and 2 lists in the "Holding cell", as there's been an accepted guideline to not put more that 5 trophy lists at the same time to, "compensate for the sanity of the reviewers".

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:

  1. Hart Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  2. James Norris Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  3. Vezina Trophy (Scorpion)
  4. Conn Smythe Trophy (Serte)
  5. Frank J. Selke Trophy (FutureNJGov)
  6. Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  7. Lester B. Pearson Award (Scorpion)
  8. Calder Memorial Trophy (Croat Canuck)
  9. Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  10. King Clancy Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  11. Jack Adams Award (Maxim)
  12. Presidents' Trophy (Scorpion)
  13. Stanley Cup (Earlier collaboration, very many involved)
  14. Traditions and anecdotes associated with the Stanley Cup (Maxim)

Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion.

AfD nomination of John Diefenbaker

[edit]

An editor has nominated John Diefenbaker, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/John Diefenbaker and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:14, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

The original featured topic drive, initiated by Scorpion0422, has concluded succesfully. National Hockey League awards is now a featured topic, with 24 articles in total. Of them, 20 are featured lists, one is a featured article, and the other three are trophy articles that were too short to become featured lists. Eight users signed up to help out, shown here. The next Featured Topic hasn't been decided upon, and the ideas and organization for it fell apart. If you have any ideas, don't hesitate to share them at WT:HOCKEY.

Notes
  • More editors are needed to help out with the newsletter. The newsletter creator doesn't have an infinite nor perfect supply of ideas, and thus he might omit some interesting news.
  • Portal:Ice hockey is being considered for featured status.
  • Should Chris Pronger have been suspended for more than eight games for stomping on Ryan Kesler? Vote here!
  • Help Patrik Stefan -- one of the greatest NHL draft busts -- become a GA status article.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Roland Melanson, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a copy from http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=18342, and therefore a copyright violation. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL), versions 1.3 or later then you should do one of the following:

  • If you have permission from the author leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Roland Melanson and send an email with confirmation of permission to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
  • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or that the material is released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Roland Melanson with a link to where we can find that note.
  • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Roland Melanson.

It may also be necessary for the text be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

If you would like to begin working on a new version of the article you may do so at this temporary page. Leave a note at Talk:Roland Melanson saying you have done so and an administrator will move the new article into place once the issue is resolved. Thank you, and please feel welcome to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Happy editing! Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:43, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I'm not the contributor who recognize the concerns here, but an administrator investigating its listing at the copyright problems board. You should have been but were not advised at the time it was tagged. My investigation seems to confirm these concerns, as internet archives verify that their publication long predates ours and text is taken verbatim from that source. This material will need to be revised or removed unless permission can be verified through one of the processes above. I will leave the matter another few days in case you would like to work on a revision in the temporary space provided. In the meantime, I will watchlist your talk page in case you would like to discuss the situation. Thank you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:43, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please do not add copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:10, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking through your contributions subsequent to the investigation above, I have discovered another 43 articles that include enough material from external sources to represent a serious copyright concern. Rather than last all of them here, I will simply point you to today's copyright problems listing, here. They begin with my relisting of the article mentioned above and continue through to David McNab. I have also identified several articles where infringement has already been cleaned by other contributors and located several that I felt I could clean on the spot. Given the magnitude of this matter, I am going to invite assistance in addressing these articles from the related Wikiproject and also at the Administrator's Noticeboard. When you were questioned here about your duplication of material, you claimed that you had believed the material in public domain. This does not explain why you continued duplicating text from that and other sites after the situation was pointed out to you; as a single example, you created this article, copying from that site, mere weeks after the above exchange. As the template above advises, Wikipedia cannot utilize copyright text from other sources. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:19, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Until it is archived, the thread at the Administrator's Noticeboard is located here. I am asking assistance in looking through your other contributions for potential infringement issues as well as input into how best monitor future contributions to ensure that infringement does not persist. Please feel free to join in the conversation there. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:46, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Honorifics

[edit]

Hi, per Wikipedia:Honorifics#Honorific prefixes please don't add honorifics to the beginning of an article. Thanks

Hi again, please note that there are also other categories for privy counsellors. Category:Members of the Privy Council of Great Britain is used before 1801, Category:Members of the Privy Council of England and Category:Members of the Privy Council of Scotland before 1707. There is even Category:Members of the Privy Council of Ireland, which members by the way have the postnominal PC (Ire). The crucial factor for the classification is the year of his/her invention. Regards
Originally a person's membership to a privy council was intended only for the reign of the sovereign, who had made the appointment, however by convention it was rather for the person's lifetime (a following sovereign was considered to have declared a reappointment) and the actually end of a membership came only by resignation, expulsion or of course death.
The Acts of Union 1707 united the Privy Councils of England and Scotland and consequently their former members sat together in the new formed Privy Council of Great Britain. While with the Act of Union 1801 all members of the latter privy council became automatically members of the succeeding Privy Council of the United Kingdom (it was rather a change of the name, then of the institution itself), the Privy Council of Ireland however ceased not to exist and is today still extant.
If your question aims whether a person, who sat first in the Privy Council of Great Britain and afterwards in that of the United Kingdom, should also be sorted in both categories, then I would say no. For a better overview in the categories and to ensure a consistency with the lists at Wikipedia, I think we should only take the date of his/her appointment into account.
I hope I have expressed me not too intricately and this could give you an answer.

Glenys Kinnock

[edit]

Hello

I'm not sure why you've added the letters 'PC' after the name of Glenys Kinnock. She is not, as far as I am aware, a member of the Privy Council, and nor do I see any reason why she ought to become one. According to the Full List of Cabinet Members she is not a member of the Cabinet and will not attend Cabinet meetings. Technically, as the wife of a Baron, she is The Rt Hon The Baroness Kinnock (although she does not use her title), and she will now be elevated to the peerage in her own right (and presumably will use her new title). However, her style of Rt Hon is derived from her being a peeress, not from being a Privy Counsellor. Do you know something that I don't?

Best wishes, --Oxonian2006 (talk) 23:08, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am similarly confused about Digby Jones, Baron Jones of Birmingham. The webpage Her Majesty's Government says that Her Majesty had signified her intention of conferring a peerage on Digby Jones, but he does not appear in the list of those whom she approved to be sworn of the Privy Council. I do not believe that he attended Cabinet, so again I can't see why he would have become a Privy Counsellor. Of course, I appreciate that anybody can be appointed a Privy Counsellor, but it seems unlikely that the honour would have been conferred on Digby Jones.--Oxonian2006 (talk) 23:18, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

More "Privy Counsellors"

[edit]

Are you sure that Mervyn Davies, Baron Davies of Abersoch is a Privy Counsellor?

How about Gareth Thomas? You have added the style The Rt Hon, proper to a Privy Counsellor, and placed him in the PC category, yet I don't think he is a PC. See HM Government, where he is called 'Mr Gareth Thomas MP', not 'The Rt Hon Gareth Thomas MP'. Finally, Gareth Thomas MP.

You deleted all my messages

[edit]

Dear Michael Drew

I hope you don't consider it very rude of me, but I am reverting your deletion of all my messages that I posted here yesterday. I was drawing your attention to the fact that you appear to have introduced a number of rather important errors into several articles. You have not responded to my observations and you have not made any amendements to the articles in question. You cannot simply go around Wikipedia making what appear to be mistakes and then try to deny that somebody has brought the fact to your attention. I was wondering whether you might have been able to draw my attention to sources of which I was ignorant which might have demonstrated that you had in fact been right to make the changes that you made. If there are no such sources I should like to arrive at a consensus before reverting your edits. I also thought it wise to bring these apparent errors to your attention as you appear to have been under the misapprehension that all members of HM Government in the UK are automatically appointed Privy Counsellors. Your approach to criticism is not constructive.--Oxonian2006 (talk) 12:26, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

British Queens Counsel

[edit]

I am not sure why you have added the above category to an article that alreay had the category "Queen's Counsel 1597-1800", which should be a subcategory of the other. It is customary not to place articles both in a parent category and its subcategory, as it clutters up the parent. Peterkingiron (talk) 18:56, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Privy Council appointments

[edit]

The people announced on the dissolution honours list are not yet privy counsellors. For the moment, it has been announced that the Queen has "approve[d] that the undermentioned be sworn of Her Majesty’s most honourable Privy Council". Once they are actually appointed, then we can add it to the articles. -Rrius (talk) 22:33, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged revisions, underwent a two-month trial which ended on 15 August 2010. Its continued use is still being discussed by the community, you are free to participate in such discussions. Many articles still have pending changes protection applied, however, and the ability to review pending changes continues to be of use.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under level 1 pending changes and edits made by non-reviewers to level 2 pending changes protected articles (usually high traffic articles). Pending changes was applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't grant you status nor change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

Ted Opitz

[edit]

Please don't add unsourced bullet-lists of honours and awards to MPs' articles. Any award or honour he's received that's worth mentioning in our article at all will have a proper reliable source out there for it (i.e. not just his own website), and any such section should be written in complete sentences and paragraphs rather than as bullet points. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 20:25, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Again: what you want to add requires real prose (i.e. full sentences arranged in full paragraphs) and real reliable sources (i.e. not his own website). An unsourced or badly-sourced list arranged in bullet points is simply not acceptable — if it's worth mentioning at all, then it's worth doing it properly. And, in fact, not all of the awards in question are notable enough to even be worth mentioning in the first place. Bearcat (talk) 00:27, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, the party's website is not a valid reliable source in lieu of his own, as it's not a media outlet that's independent of him. And neither is an article on nowpublic.com, which is a crowdsourced "anybody can post absolutely anything they want" sort of news site that isn't subject to the kind of editorial oversight necessary for a source to be considered reliable for our purposes. (And furthermore, Opitz figures directly in almost every single story that the writer of your link has ever posted to nowpublic at all, so from our neutral point of view perspective here, I have to work under the assumption that he or she was a campaign volunteer.)
An article in The Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star or the Toronto Sun, or on the CBC News website, would be a valid source; a source published by anybody who has a vested interest in the way Opitz is presented to the voting public, such as his own campaign office or the party, is not. And I should point out, as well, that the fact that you most likely copied and pasted the list of awards directly from the nowpublic.com article (it was worded identically, right down to the inclusion of unnecessarily redundant verbs) means that you also need to familiarize yourself with our copyright policy; you can't copy and paste any text into Wikipedia directly from another site unless we have express written permission to use it.
And finally, some of the awards simply aren't notable enough to be worth mentioning here at all — and that's another reason why we can't source such things to the party website, because the party isn't working with the same standards of "the award has sufficient notability to merit mention here" as we do. They have a vested interest in presenting his credentials in the best possible light, while we have a responsibility not to pretend that somebody giving him a "thank you for helping to organize World Youth Day" certificate is actually important enough to be worth mentioning in an encyclopedia (though if you can properly source a sentence or two about what he actually did on behalf of World Youth Day, that is something that would be worth mentioning.)
And the simple fact is that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. We don't need a policy to dictate that our articles need to be written primarily in proper English prose — it's inherent in the fact that we're an encyclopedia. But if you really do need a policy to dictate this to you, then do feel free to peruse our Manual of Style at your leisure. Bearcat (talk) 06:28, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're doing great work on expanding the List of Freedom of the City recipients – I just want to point out that, as mentioned in the article lead, the list is only intended to include notable recipients (i.e. people with their own Wikipedia article). Minor edits

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions. Please mark your edits as "minor" only if they are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 06:30, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Advise

[edit]

Please see: MOS:JOBTITLES, MOS:CAPS and MOS:DOCTOR. Generic stuff like 'city' need not be capitalised. Prime minister is a common noun and when not used as a title, should be minisculised. Honorary stuff like 'Right Honourable' should not be added with a person at every instance, with the only exception being the |hon_prefix and |hon_suffix in an infobox.

Notice

The article List of honorary citizens of Megève has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A "list" of one person, sourced only to a primary source, without evidence that the subject (honorary citizens of megève) has received significant attention in independent sources beyond routine coverage.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Freedoms – RAF stations

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your contributions to some of the RAF station pages. A list perhaps is not the best option for displaying such information when there aren't likely to be more than one or two freedoms granted to most stations. Normally such information is mentioned in the history section. Also see MOS:BOLD for use of bold and MOS:FLAG for flag use. Please add proper citations which back up the information added though, those for RAF Linton-on-Ouse did not. Thanks Thx811 (talk) 18:25, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Michael Drew

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username CaptainEek and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I’ve proposed an article that you started, List of honorary citizens of Taoyuan, for deletion because it meets one of the relevant criterion. The particular issue can be located in the notice, that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you wish to prevent the deletion:

  1. Edit the page
  2. Remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. Click the Publish changes button.

But, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the raised issues. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|CaptainEek}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

FRSA post nominal

[edit]

Hi there, I noticed you're adding FRSA to Royal Society of Arts members where it appears according to Charles Allom the post nominal wasn't used before 1914. See Royal Society of Arts talk page section. In John Hick and other examples that I've seen, entries in the various period (Victorian) directories don't use FRSA but they do refer to the individual being a member of the Society of Arts. Thank you for creating List of honorary citizens of Afghanistan.

User:Doomsdayer520, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

Thank you for this new article. Please try to expand the list, because a "List" article is not very informative with only one entry. I believe the gentleman in this news story qualifies for the list as well: https://www.khaama.com/afghanistan-granting-honorary-citizenship-to-japanese-aid-worker-03714/

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Brenda Hale, Baroness Hale of Richmond, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Easby (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It seems your most recent edit conflicted with mine. Stop adding bare URLs and that won't happen. Walter Görlitz (talk) 02:43, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Per Wikipedia:Citing sources#How to place an inline citation using ref tags and Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Punctuation and footnotes, please do not leave spaces between punctuation and the citation identifier, as you did here. Also, please note that the addition of content, even if just a date, should not be tagged as a minor edit. DrKay (talk) 07:39, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You're still doing it wrong. There is no space between the ref tag and the preceding word or punctuation. Please also learn how to bundle citations. Please review Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Help:Footnotes for guidance. DrKay (talk) 09:09, 9 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please have the courtesy to use them. Anna (talk) 22:30, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just noting that this concern is still relevant. See WP:ES for more information on edit summaries. Edits like this could use some explanation. This article title appears to have been changed from an appropriate one (List of...) to a more unclear one (Honors...), and with this edit to an unclear one using the wrong national variety of English (Honours...). It may help other editors to understand your rationales. Larry Hockett (Talk) 03:26, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Too many flags, too much bolding

[edit]

At List of honors received by Jill Biden and List of honorary degrees awarded to Bill Cosby I removed the flags you added as well as the bolding around dates. Stop adding flags and bolding. Also, don't put in the message that the section needs expansion. It looks amateurish. Binksternet (talk) 23:46, 26 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ITN recognition for Barbara Windsor

[edit]

On 14 December 2020, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Barbara Windsor, which you updated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:33, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on David Briggs (Lord Lieutenant) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://cheshirelieutenancy.org.uk/the-lord-lieutenant-of-cheshire/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Onel5969 TT me 12:38, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your one source verifies that a medal of similar title exists but doesn't support any further content. From a novice editor I'd have draftified it ... please add your sources. Thanks. PamD 07:02, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You received a final warning on 20th April regarding your persistent addition of unsourced content and refusal to adhere to the Manual of Style. Since then, you have repeatedly added unsourced content[11][12][13], and added spaces or even breaks before bare citations[14][15][16]. It is disruptive to continue with edits after being asked multiple times to stop. DrKay (talk) 10:28, 24 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Immediately after coming off this block, you have added bare urls and added spaces before ref tags[17][18][19][20], thus completely ignoring all the warnings, and the block, and continuing the same behavior as before. You are therefore blocked again. DrKay (talk) 16:59, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
