Photo question

Hi NS: Can you tell me what I need to do to get interior shots such as this to be better? They always seems to turn out way too blue, and it's not something I can fix in post-processing. This was on a tripod (10 sec delay so there was no reaction to my pressing the button; you can see the metadata). I'm not all that skilled with manually choosing exposure time and (especially) aperture, but I seem to do fine when I have a general rule of thumb to start with (i.e. this). Yeah, i'll archive soonish. I think Diliff is the expert as far as architecture goes (he might like to chime in). I don't think I've uploaded a single indoor architecture shot to wiki. I think the shot needs to be wider. White balance wise, either set the white balance on your camera manually before taking the shot, or shoot RAW (then the WB is easily adjustable later). Compositionally I'd be taking steps to the right to get some symmetry going. Problems beyond that are mostly because of the lighting. If the place is open until after the sun goes down, then head in at sunset and balance the light inside against the ambient. You will end up with something blue in the windows like (http://www.indigobluestudios.com/splashimages/real-estate-photography.jpg), but not blown. The winter solstice is your best chance for sunset being within opening hours. Failing that NY state had many thunderstorms whilst I was there. If you shot through the middle of one of them it should be pretty dark outside :). If all those options are not possible, then pick an overcast day and try exposure blending or HDR. Composition is irrelevant; this is one of 6 images I planned to stitch together. I know the guy with the key, so assumedly I can get in whenever is necessary, since I'm doing a photographic survey of the campus. I'll have to figure out how to do the white balance. I see. Just after sunset matching against ambient is what i'd be doing then. It is a matter of timing in that case. White balance should be warmer, either adjust with raw until it looks right or try "cloudy" or "shade" in the in camera settings. Noodle snacks (talk) 05:02, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party. Just looking at that photo of yours Wad.. sorry, UpstateNYer! (Can I abbreviate that somehow? USNYER?). It's quite a complicated and messed up one, because there seems to be multiple light sources at play. You can correct the WB for the table at the bottom quite easily (since it's a white table, it makes a good grey card, but doing so makes the upper part far too yellow. The mistake that many people make is to assume that the colour cast has to be completely eliminated in the first place, though. Photos taken indoors with incandescent lighting naturally have a warm cast, and although our eyes largely correct for it, we still perceive the light to be slightly warm. If you correct for that incandescent cast completely, the photo look really awful. Same goes for sunsets, etc etc. Anyway, all that is to get to my point. I had a quick fiddle (with the image!) at work (only have an old version of Photoshop Elements to play with) and I think the image looks most natural with a recipe of roughly two parts blue channel desaturation, one part green channel desaturation and perhaps one part red channel saturation. You can play with the absolute values to see what works for you. Ideally there will still be a slight blue cast on the table, as correcting for that completely is too strong an effect IMO. As I said though, correcting the white balance of an image with multiple light sources is never easy, and there is never an absolute solution. Case in point is the lively debate here. It was largely about the use of HDR exposure blending, but also the white balance, as there were two light sources - the multicoloured city lights, and the blue hour glow of dusk. Which is the appropriate one to correct for? The answer is neither and both. Just try to find the right balance for what looks like the best compromise! Anyway, rant over. It wasn't supposed to be a rant, it was supposed to help! As for why all your interior shots are coming out with a blue cast, I have no idea. If you're shooting JPEG, you should set the WB to suit the conditions (incandescent for incandescent, fluorescent for fluorescent, etc). Better still is to shoot RAW and use a good RAW processor, which gives you complete lossless control over the colour balance, but that may be a bigger step forward than you're prepared to go. Mineral photos

Found a Fungi growing in .....

Hello, I was just browsing through . Seen the orange noodle like's growing in the front yard in Mississippi. I was just wondering a little about it. resmbles the Noodles, but as of now fairly small, resmbles (Lasagnia) but is bright orange. It is reaching for the sky like a plant. I have a phot in my phone ,but bluetooth data transfer not available for me. Anyway was just curiouse on where it came from. As we have had alot of humidity the past couple of weeks. Any I will leave my email, if you would like to contact me, I'm new to this just kinda intreged about it . I never seen any around this area. Email:(hidden because of spam bots etc) Anyway maybe you can shed some light or know someone who can , just curious.

Focus Distance

• Hi. Its a great picture but it wouldn't pass FPC because the resolution is too low (need to be closer to the bird, as difficult as that is). Add the species to the caption. Add it to the species article too and wait a month and you may have a decent shot at VPC (depending on if there are better images available or not). In general there is WP:PPR. Clinking (Grey) Currawong

I'd be very happy if you ever got some photos of these...might even warrant a subspecies article at some stage. I expanded Pied Currawong and would be good to do the other two species. Always wondered why the Black was elevated to a species and the Clinking wasn't...only photo on wikipedia is a crap one I took many moons ago of a Grey Currawong in the Blue Mtns...Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:47, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi NS. Just wondering about this. In the nomination you say that this is an adult, but it doesn't really look to be such to me - though there's not a lot to give a scale, it looks too small and thin. How sure are you that it was an adult? If it's a juvenile that should be identified. If you're sure it's an adult, since you took it on Maria Island perhaps it's possible that there is some subspecies there or that wombats there display a type of Insular dwarfism? --jjron (talk) 12:23, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

I'd be 90% confident that it is an adult. It was of similar size to the other adults on Maria (I saw a number of them) and the ones that I have seen at Cradle Mountain before. There were a few juveniles about but they were considerably smaller. It had it's own burrow too if that counts for anything. Interesting. Certainly comes up different from the wombats around here. Much lighter in colouring too. I wonder if all Tasmanian wombats have diverged a bit from the mainland variety? Interesting that the Common Wombat article identifies a Bass Strait subspecies but not a Tas one. Size/shapewise I'd say this one from the Wombat article, also from Tas, is more like what I'm familiar with, although colouring is still different. --jjron (talk) 07:56, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

My "Australian Museum Complete Book of Australian Mammals" states that the Tasmanian common wombats are indeed a separate subspecies. Vombatus ursinus tasmaniensis vs the Vombatus ursinus hirsutus for the southeastern mainland. Doesn't really say much about the differences though. --jjron (talk) 14:48, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

The hazards

I am writing this not with the aim of challenging you or fighting back or anything like that, but with the goal of establishing some discussion out of which I will definitely learn (and maybe you too). I find the picture in [Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/File:The_Hazards_From_Hazards_Beach.jpg]] really having the problem that you were pointing in Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Bridge in Central Park even more, I find that there the choice of having in the picture Hazards and beach is no justified. Let me say, that I don't think the composition is bad. It is a very pretty picture that I would put as my Desktop background. Now, while the composition is not wrong the choice is not very happy for addressing the topic. IMO the boring frontal picture in the article The hazards does a better job in that direction. Of course boring frontal views is not what I was trying to promote with the nomination of the bridge. But it is not always easy to find the unusual good composition. My point is about noticing a difference, through comparing the two pictures linked above, of compositions in which the subject is not predominant (in area occupied), but one is made in such a way that favors the intention or the purpose of the picture and other that, IMO, doesn't. I will not oppose the nomination since I don't feel right doing so and the issue has been pointed anyways by someone. Instead I believe that this talk can be far more productive.  franklin  04:18, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

• The central park image has two claims to enclopaedic value. The first is for central park. I would argue that you can't really see much of the park and that a shot from one of the surrounding tall buildings is going to achieve much more. From the bridge point of view it occupies around 6.5% of the frame and doesn't have sufficient detail. I did suggest that you might find encyclopaedic value in the Photographer's article. It may even be worth a renomination with the image there. By comparison the hazards occupy about 15% of the image (the boring one is about 30%). The difference (in my view) is that the foreground adds considerable value to the two freycinet articles. That said it isn't looking like it will pass anyway. One of your images nominated for delisting

Hi, I have nominated your image of the paper clip, Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/delist/File:Paper Clip Surface Tension 1 edit.jpg, for delisting. Its use in the article surface tension is being challenged from time to time and I have been reverting its deletion there but I don't feel right that the only strong reason I can give is that it is a featured picture. I guess it should be the other way around, it should be a FP because it is strongly placed in an article. If the result of the nomination is that it preserves its status then I will have a better reason to revert its deletion. • Hi, I'm from Tasmania, which is outside the natural geographical distribution of the Budgerigar. There are many other parrot species present there though. Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House

In regards to this comment, the northern tip of Garden Island is now open to the public, and the ferry to Watson's Bay stops off at it. The Navy has set up a very tall viewing platform with spectacular views of the Bridge and Opera House and is well worth a visit (the Naval museum is pretty good as well if you're interested in military history). • No problems. I should have dropped in on you sometime - I've been to Canberra a few times in the last six months. Did you go to that GLAM-WIKI? Canberra seems to have lots of bird life (particularly in winter). There are an assortment of parrots and many other things too. Add details of mineral photos?

I've used a couple of your splendid mineral photos recently, for instance adding your Creedite photo to its "hometown" at Abasolo, Durango.

I'm almost certain of the origin of this one -- it's a distinctive locality -- and added a comment at the photo. I saw in an earlier comment that (most?) of these minerals aren't yours. Would it be possible to have the owner add standard details to these photos sometime? Locality (as precisely as known), size, date purchased and from whom -- would all be nice. See (for example) File:Calcite-18546.jpg for a decent format (minus the puffery -- this was originally a sales-catalog photo). This would make your very nice photos more useful to the mineralogists and mineral-collectors in our audience -- and enable their use at more articles in Wikipedia. Making money from photos

Would you be interested in doing an interview for the Wikipedia Signpost about making money from free photos? I think a lot of Wikipedians might be interested to learn more about what its like trying to both contribute photos to Wikipedia/Commons and make money licensing photos, so I'm interviewing a few Wikipedian photographers. (I do some of that myself, but I'm sure my experience along those lines is very limited compared to you and some of the other more prominent photographers around here.) --ragesoss (talk) 21:04, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

• I get many emails per week about use - but most of them just involve explaining the licensing. Digital photographs are an elastic good, therefore there isn't really much money in selling them. I can't say I've made a lot of money from selling them online. If you want to make money from photography then I'd recommend selling prints at a market. I believe Diliff makes a bit via stock photography, but I'm not sure much business comes from the wiki. The most you can reasonably expect is widespread copyright infringement. The dreaded Error 99 message....

I'm getting with my 400D when I use its normal 17-85 mm lens (but not the zoom). Out of warranty, so is Canon the best bet to fix (lens that is...)? Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:29, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

• I've had it once or twice - try cleaning the lens and camera contacts with a pencil eraser. Failing that try a different lens if there is one available anywhere to determine if it is the body or the lens. Then send it to canon and get a repair quote I guess. tried cleaning. works fine with zoom lens. intially error only came up in AF mode on M control, then 'spread'. It was like it couldn't focus. Switching lenses it was ok....Casliber (talk · contribs) 06:51, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

There isn't much else I could suggest unfortunately. Considering that there is a service centre in Sydney (North Ryde) I'd just take it or mail it there and ask for a quote. 400D's have bugs (coding issues) or just a different issue? I'm not a Pentax fan (more of a Canon fan) but my K100D has been going well, I've dropped it a few times and the only issue I have is four dead pixels (and my battery door no longer locks but that is nothing. I'll be upgrading to a Canon DSLR in the next two years but not sure what one and the budget I'll have for it. Bidgee (talk) 07:34, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

No bugs, Error 99 just means an error communicating between the lens and the camera. In Casliber's case my guess is it's the lens. My 400D's flash won't come up without a bit of prying, USB port doesn't work and a few other things, but its done pretty well with all the knocking around, water (sometimes salty) and so on its been presented with. I find it difficult to 'make' the flash come up if you're wanting to do a fill in flash. My biggest problem thus far has been my desktop's slowness to read the card, so have resorted to the USB connection instead.
