I'm archiving copies of barnstars and similar kudos here, since it's hard to remember where they are in over 100 archive pages. Skimming this reminds me of the great things about this project and its editorial community, when certain participants in it get me down from time to time. — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 21:31, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
Chapeau
[edit]... for this one! Cheers - DVdm (talk) 20:20, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks! I actually like hats. :-) Your readability tweak was a good idea. I was a little concerned about it myself, but I'm not a cards editor, so I wasn't sure if there was a typical way of making hands more legible. (Also not sure if people conventionally use the card symbols that are available in Unicode, etc.). I do edit a lot of games articles, but almost exclusively in cue sports and related. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō)ˀ Contribs. 12:49, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- I specially like hats when there's a set of dice under them :-)
- Perhaps you don't know, but overhere we use the name chapeau for the cup and, by extension, for the game itself. As you can see here—als je Nederlands een beetje in orde is—, we play an entirely different game with it, a game where one can practice the fine art of subtle bluffing, downright lying, assessing oponents' behaviour, and accurately estimating probabilities. We also play the "Mexican" variant, which is even subtler. Check it out and cheers! - DVdm (talk) 18:26, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- I didn't know that, about the chapeau. I thought you were awarding me a virtual hat. :-) . I am familiar with the bluff game (possibly the Mexican version, since I learned it in California), but have always played that one with regular dice. Anyway, if you like what I did in the English version, certainly feel free to "port" it to the Netherlands Wikipedia. I may be able to work through the Dutch enough to add something about the other variants to the English article here, since it is rather paltry. Heh. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō)ˀ Contribs. 04:04, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, it was meant as a virtual hat award as well - I had seen a hat on your user page :-)
Porting from there to here could be a bit problematic, as there's not many sources around, alas. - DVdm (talk) 17:40, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'll have to dig through my game encyclopedias and stuff. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō)ˀ Contribs. 17:45, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

It may seem a little over the top to barnstar for a couple of days work but in an area where there's been entrenched battle ground for so long it has put a huge smile on my face, and moved me on a few of my positions, to be disagreed with in such a consensus building fashion. My faith in wikipedia has been somewhat restored and I can only hope it's a sea change for the way the talk page looks on the articles. SPACKlick (talk) 23:26, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. :-) It probably helps that I had no real view on the topic before arriving. My only approach is from the perspective of the (complicated, and "always balance A against B, C, D, and E criteria") article titles policy, and what's best for the readers. To me, it all boils down to whether "vapor", without any context, is potentially misleading, PoV-pushing, or anti-informative. Editors too often go with a "COMMONNAME above all, forever" approach, but it's not what the policy actually wants, for good reason. — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 08:20, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Opinion Barnstar
[edit]I just wanted to say "thank you" for coming in and definitively closing the Request for Comments regarding an anonymous user's fringe theory about the nature of the U.S. dollar. In case you had looked, the article had been hijacked by a rolling series of I.P. users since January of this year. User:Khajidha and I would attempt to bring some sanity to the situation, only to be flooded by lengthy diatribes of little worth. Nobody seemed willing to do anything about the situation, so I started a RfC in the hope that some sane Wikipedians would come to the rescue. I then stepped back so that I wouldn't appear biased. Some brave souls did come, but they were pummeled by the same ad nauseum arguments. Finally, at the first light of the fifth day, the cavalry arrived. Thanks to edits by User:NewEnglandYankee, User:Ronz, User:TenOfAllTrades, and finally, thanks to your definitive opinion in the RfC closure, the article seems to have been wrestled back to reality.
For these reasons I bestow upon thee the esteemed

Thanks for your definitive non-admin closure of a RfC, thereby asserting a sane consensus and bringing U.S. Dollar back to congruence with reality. BirdValiant (talk) 06:34, 30 September 2017 (UTC) |
- LOL, thanks, and in retrospect I should have looked a little bit closer at the history. What I saw was all the weird personal rambling about gold being "illegal" to own in the US (WTF? I guess I'm a big ol' criminal then), and how "theoretically" you could still maybe get gold for a dollar if yadda-yadda-yadda. The entire thing looked exactly like those rants about gun "statistics" that far-left fringies pull out of nowhere, or about being able to avoid federal income tax because "The United States" and "The United States of America" are different entities and doodle-doodle-dee that the far-right fringies pull out of nowhere, and it just had to stop per WP not being Facebook or 4Chan. People will troll all day (from both directions) on stuff like that, just because it's fun to argue. I did notice the "slow editwar" stuff going on to push the WP:FRINGE idea that the US dollar isn't a fiat currency, I just didn't pay attention to who in particular had opened the RfC, thus didn't deduce the intent of it. So, sorry if I "shot" you by accident. Of course, it being a WP:NAC, someone who wants to keep blathering about their pet economics hypotheses could reopen it, but we can hope not. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ< 06:46, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

The fact was ... that modern cue sports games such as snooker and nine-ball can be traced back to the game of ground billiards, played with hoops and mallets (illustration shown)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ground billiards. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Ground billiards), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

I learned a lot from you about Wikipedia in the Jean Mill afd. Just wanted to say thanks! User:Lightburst 23:10, 19 June 2019 (UTC) |
- @Lightburst: Glad it was a useful wringer. >;-) Thank you for making a good case and doing the leg-work. I think her article is pretty tight, despite my initial skepticism of a bio article on her. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 05:39, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Trouted
[edit]Whack! You've been whacked with a wet trout. Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly. |
You have been trouted for: having a kick-ass profile. :D Ivario (talk) 02:17, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- Schweet. Pan-seared, fresh-caught trout, with hashed-browns and an egg on the side is the best breakfast ever. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 02:23, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for keeping the Nithyananda page clean! I intended to fix all the poor grammar, but you beat me to it. It must've been quite a ride for you, to see the man's antics unfold over the past three years. Happy editing! - @Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI: Thanks! It has indeed been strange. I know someone who became a follower of this guru), though this did not color my approach to the content. I've tried hard (before giving it a rest and letting others do it for a year or so) to keep it pruned of both ranty and insufficiently sourced attacks by detractors, and wild promotional/miraculous claims by adherents. Given the state of the media in India, it's difficult to ferret out exactly what is going on legally. The fact that he's been accused of various things doesn't make him guilty, but fleeing the country as more charges pile up doesn't look good either. I'm a bit reminded of John McAfee (and I'm not sure our article on him even covers all the stuff he's allegedly gotten up to). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 19:53, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
