A Note About Advertising and Conflicts of Interest

[edit]

If I reverted your link addition or removed your links from an article, please read this:

Due to the rising profile of Wikipedia and the amount of extra traffic it can bring a site, there is a great temptation to use Wikipedia to advertise or promote sites. This includes both commercial and non-commercial sites. You should avoid linking to a website that you own, maintain or represent, even if the guidelines otherwise imply that it should be linked. If the link is to a relevant and informative site that should otherwise be included, please consider mentioning it on the talk page and let neutral and independent Wikipedia editors decide whether to add it. This is in line with the conflict of interest guidelines.

If you have additional information to add to the article, why not simply add it rather than having an external link?

Small galleries at furniture

[edit]

Hello Versageek! Yesterday I’ve added galleries at the page named furniture. They have the purposes to make readers better understand the periods. The edits I make on this page as constructive as possible. The deletion of them is very nonsense. Please let me add small galleries of four pictures at every section of this page. This isn’t a type of vandalism.

[edit]

Hi Versageek,

I am new to editing Wikipedia and I was hoping to add useful information about insects to pages. I make educational YouTube videos about insects. I do not want to run into a problem with "conflict of interest" policies, but I also think that these videos would add beneficial information to the pages. Somewhere it mentioned, bringing it up in a "Talk" and letting other editors decide if it was a valuable addition. Where would I do that? I tried to just place a couple up and your bot knocked them down and I just don't want to step on any toes as I did not know that links were discouraged. Also, would it be more okay to just add written information to the body and then add the link at the bottom as a reference?

Thank you, Insectopia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Insectopia 2015 (talkcontribs) 20:26, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For a broad based discussion, you could try: The WikiProject Insects talk page. Otherwise on the individual talk pages of the articles where you are trying to add links. --Versageek 19:17, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The page is Pedro Fernández. I had updated It with recent discography, updated, working links to his official page, his Twitter and Facebook pages. Updated the TV section with his 2015 and 2016 shows. Updated the opening with his Grammy awards. Updated the movie section by adding missing roles. Then your bot comes along and wipes it all out. If you can't capture updated data then leave it alone if you see it has been manually updated. That was qiute a bit of effort you wiped out! Wikipedia isn't a directory or link farm, also please see other stuff exists. I'm guessing from your username that you have some relation to the site you are adding. Adding links in this manner is discouraged and could cause the site to be blacklisted --Versageek 20:46, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You can't put in blacklist a site the have information that matter to people.

I added the articles with information according to the content and what people are looking for.

So...I would like you to explain what do you don't like about the information? What type of information is ok for those pages??

thanks for your time.

regards,

Andrew — Preceding unsigned comment added by AndrewBOS (talkcontribs) 05:10, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

We can and do blacklist sites if they are repeatedly added to articles by users with an apparent conflict of interest. Thus far, you haven't repeatedly added links to the site. The content on the site you want to link to adds nothing to the article that isn't already available, either on the page or in one of the existing references. If you want to add the link to that page, I suggest asking for consensus on the article talk page. --Versageek 16:22, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

checkuser check

[edit]

Someone brought up on Wolfdog's wikipedia talk page that he rarely does edit summaries. On many occasions he will delete lots of text and never put up a summary of his edits. he has been doing this for a long time. 57.9 percent of his edits do not have summaries. I was wondering if you could checkuser this user and see if he's deliberately going around and doing things he shouldn't be doing on wiki page articles? Since he does this so often and so frequently, I think it should be looked into. This would be unfair to all the other users that contribute to wikipedia that spend alot of time trying to make contributions just to have someone go around very often and delete things without summaries. If a user is going around and deleting large amount of text without a reason, I would figure that would be vandalism. And many vandals like to go around doing that under numerous accounts. And account that has nearly a 60 percent rate of deleting things without a summary, is in my view a problem. Thank you. Juliep94 (talk) 21:20, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think you misunderstand the function of the checkuser tool. It detects if multiple users are sharing the same IP address. It wouldn't be of any help here. The best solution in this case would be to ask the user to please use edit summaries. It appears that someone has recently requested that on his talk page. --Versageek 23:41, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replying. I'm not 100 percent on the rules here so sorry if I'm wrong. Since this user goes around deleting a lot of text all the time from various articles, I was wondering since many vandals do this, if he could also be going under other names and doing something similar? Sometimes people spend weeks/months of research to add to articles. I think it's vandalism if you just go around and delete and snip stuff here and there. Obviously pages evolve all the time, and that's a good thing. But going around and randomly deleting things with no explanation to me is vanadalism. The near 60 percent rate is what worried me. This leads to suspicion. I don't know for sure if they're going under multiple aliases. I figured a quick checkuser would be able to find out if they did or not. And if they didn't, I'd have no problem apologizing for being wrong. I'd apologize to them personally on the talk page if that ended up being the case. Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Versageek. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Versageek.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

[edit]

Hello, Versageek. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Previously I added links and they were approved but today you deleted them - no problem. I can see that I'm not very welcome here... 3. Invitation to beta-test IABot

[edit]

Hello Versageek! I would like to invite you to help beta test the interface for InternetArchiveBot. IABot is a bot designed to help mitigate link rot on Wikipedia. Users can control the bot by using a Management Interface that was designed to be integrated with and similar to Wikipedia (For example, only autoconfirmed users can run the bot; on-wiki administrators have admin access on the tool; user permissions on the tool are flag based; logs are kept; etc.)

If you'd like to help out, feel free to give the interface a go to check for bugs/anomalies/other weird things and send your feedback to Cyberpower678, the bot operator. Again, the interface is at http://tools.wmflabs.org/iabot/ (If it's down for maintenance right now, it'll be back up shortly). If you are not interested, feel free to ignore this message. Irish coin blog articles

[edit]

Hi,

I did not intend to spam.

My blog is intended as a useful guide / source of additional info for Irish coin collectors. It is much acclaimed within the coin collecting community - especially to those new to the hobby since I try to explain the history, politics and economics behind the coin issues. I also explain technical wordings and phrases.

It also contains much more info than some of your articles, e.g. St Patrick's Halfpennies / Farthings.

Please re-consider your undo's.

Best regards, James O'Brien — Preceding unsigned comment added by JJJOBrien (talkcontribs) 06:45, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The general rule is that you should not be adding links to your own website. I did look at the site & it does look like it can be useful as a resource, however you should suggest the addition on the article(s) talk page rather than add it yourself. Also, you are consistently breaking page formatting with the way you are inserting the links. --Versageek 20:41, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Versageek, I'm writing you here because I've seen this is the main wiki where you edit and because here you're an abusefilter, checkuser and sysop. I think I've found a few proxies used recently by a single user who hides behind them to make similar unconstructive edits in different pages, and a few socks used to do the same kind of edits created recently. If I write here the suspicious proxies IP ranges, will you be able to block them (as they're forbidden on Wikipedia) and do the same with the socks created over such ranges (as they weren't created for reasons according to community standards)? Let me know, please, I'd like to be helpful to the project by reporting vandals in bad faith who use proxies and socks such as this one! Enowtenorez (talk) 08:11, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

XLinkBot

[edit]

Your XLinkBot is the kind of thing that drives people away from Wikipedia. I really don't understand why you reverted all my changes. You even reverted my changes that were links to other Wikipedia pages that were relevant to the discussion. Did you spend any time looking through what I attempted to contribute? I really don't think so. The last time this happened to me was 5+ years ago and I vowed to myself to never return to this evil place with power-happy mods and now I remember why! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sdfoley01 (talkcontribs) 08:02, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Christmas!
Hello Versageek,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 22:55, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well V. MarnetteD|Talk 20:45, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Starter kit for smaller wikis

[edit]

Hello, and greetings! As part of a Starter kit project for smaller wikis, there is a work-in-progress guide around Bots & Tools here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit/Bots_and_Tools. I'm reaching out with a few questions, as there is a mention of the "XLinkBot" on this page in the list of useful bots section:

  • Is it okay to have the bot listed in that section? Are there any concerns?
  • Would you be okay with folks from smaller wikis reaching out to you for help, and would you be willing to list your preferred method of contact under "Bot owner contact"?
  • Is there anything like a note or reminder related to the bot that you would like to add in the "description" column?

Additionally, if you have a suggestion for any other bots or tools currently on the list which should not be there and those that are not there and should be there, I would love to know about them—looking forward to your input! Srishti (talk) 08:03, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

AvianSociety.org was removed from Avian. Why? Another link Avian Limited is listed? Avian Society is referred to as Avian just as Audubon is without Society. Avian Society is an educational site and not a "commercial manufacturer" like Avian Limited. (Paul)

I am also new to this wiki and would like to find out what is going on. The information isn’t appropriate where you added it, and external links to Facebook pages are never appropriate in article text. You might be able to add information about his parents in a section called: ==Early Life==, with text along the lines of “Wallace was born in wherever, USA to Firstname Wallace and Firstname Wallace. This information should include a reference to a reliable published source. --Versageek 16:00, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and thank you for your message although it made me feel discouraged :-( The informations I have corrected and/or added are correct. My father died on January the 2nd and all the other information I have added is accurate. I am (or was, to be more precise) a professional journalist, so I do verify (ex: when I added Thanos Adamopoulos it was because he has a significant musical career as well, and inserted him before Eve because he is older than her). I do understand you should monitor whats on Wikipedia but you make it so inaccessible to 'normal' people that it really discourages me from further editing. Financial markets content project

[edit]

Hello,

My name is Tijana and I am a team leader of Wikinvesting.com project. Along with five of my colleagues and friends who are investment and trading enthusiasts, I have started the Wikinvesting which is based on MediaWiki platform.

Wikinvesting is a non-profit, game-changing movement which aims to round up all those individuals who believe that unbiased financial market information and knowledge should be extensively available to everyone. And this is also how I got to you :) Namely, I was searching for information I needed on financial markets and I have noticed that there isn’t a lot of "useful" information available on Wikipedia (to my surprise). In addition to that, the information available through sites such as Investopedia or Investing is tightly controlled by the business owners and hence easily manipulated. Simply, traders like me could not trust such sources in planning the investment and trading strategy...

So, what we want to create is a base where active or aspiring traders, content writers, investors, and generally financial enthusiasts will share their knowledge and experience, discuss investment opportunities, analyze news etc., all for the purpose of wikinvesting becoming the biggest financial knowledge “open source” base. I am not sure if you are familiar with the recent case of GameStop where gaming enthusiasts gather around the GameStop via reddit forum and prevented the hedge funds from sinking it down. They were basically our inspiration to starting this project.

I would love to share more information about this project with you and also discuss future potential opportunities, hence if you are interested, please let me know so we can continue this on our slack channel.

Cheers,

TijanaRistic (talk) 13:27, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Versageek, please visit Abi Carter and the talk page, as well as some editors' talk pages. (See this) There is some serious ownership behavior and edit warring going on. The immediate problems have been solved with a one-week block of Headtothestripe. That will likely not change their attitude, so I expect problems when they return. If that happens, a topic ban might be the best solution. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 13:31, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I 've created and edit the page for author C.M. James removing anything that would seem as advertisement or promotion. The goal is not to advertise but to link actual author websites AND links from other sources. Reading over the article I thought everything was strictly information and not bias to the author. If there was a statement made about credentials or awards it was cited in the article. If anything else was placed incorrectly is it possible to know exactly what? Because reading through it I can't seem to find anything that is promotional. Relevant to the subject maybe. If a claim was made then there were links to show that the statement can be verified, but wasn't use to promote. A story and time line is being explained to show when and how c.m. james became a writer which includes correct information, cites, and a timeline. There are accomplishments made by the author which led c.m. james to focus on his passion which is writing. And I thought those needed to be cited. Am I needing to only write actual author information nothing really else? Dmcneely25 (talk) 21:13, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
