Season summary
editPre-season
editFollowing the historic 20th scudetto victory, on 22 May 2024, Suning relinquished control of its controlling stake in Inter Milan after it failed to repay the €395 million it owed Oaktree Capital Management, with the American firm taking 99.6% control of the club.[7] On 4 June, Inter shareholders approved the new board of directors, and CEO Giuseppe Marotta was named president of the club.[8] On 11 June, the club announced the contract extension for midfielder and vice-captain Nicolò Barella until 2029.[9] On 1 July, Inter bid farewell to Juan Cuadrado,[10] Davy Klaassen,[11] Alexis Sánchez,[12] and Stefano Sensi[13] as their contracts expired, as well as Emil Audero, who returned to Sampdoria after the end of his loan spell with the Nerazzurri.[14] On 6 July, Inter announced the arrival of Polish midfielder Piotr Zieliński on a free transfer from Napoli.[15] On 9 July, Inter signed Spanish goalkeeper Josep Martínez from Genoa for a reported fee of €13.5 million plus €2 million of bonuses.[16] On 12 July, head coach Simone Inzaghi officially prolonged his contract with the club until 2026.[17] The following day, Inter officialised the arrival on a free transfer of Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi from Porto.[18] On 7 August 2024, talented attacking midfielder Valentín Carboni joined Olympique de Marseille on a season-long loan with a reported option to buy for €36 million and a €40 million counter-option in favour of Inter.[19] On 12 August, captain Lautaro Martínez officially renewed his contract with the club until 2029.[20]
August
editOn 17 August 2024, Inter started their league campaign with a 2–2 away draw against Genoa, with striker Marcus Thuram scoring a brace for the Nerazzurri.[21] On 24 August, Inter secured their first win of the season, beating Lecce 2–0 with goals from Matteo Darmian and Hakan Çalhanoğlu.[22] On 30 August, Argentine centre-back Tomás Palacios became the last signing of the summer transfer window, for a reported fee of €6.5 million plus €4.5 million of bonuses to be equally shared between Talleres de Córdoba and Independiente Rivadavia.[23] On the same day, an own goal from Berat Djimsiti, a volley goal from Barella, and a brace from Thuram allowed Inter to obtain a clear 4–0 victory over Atalanta before the international break.[24]
September
editOn 15 September, a heavily rotated Inter squad struggled against fellow Lombard side Monza, with Denzel Dumfries scoring a late equaliser to grab a 1–1 draw.[25] The following day, Inter confirmed that Albanian playmaker Kristjan Asllani extended his contract with the club until 2028.[26] On 18 September, Inter's seasonal Champions League debut ended in a goalless draw away from home against Manchester City, in what was a rematch of the 2023 final.[27] On 22 September, Inter suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 1–2 to AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina, ending a six-game winning streak against their city rivals. Federico Dimarco initially leveled the score after Christian Pulisic's opening goal, but a headed strike from Matteo Gabbia in the 89th minute sealed the result in favour of the Rossoneri.[28] Six days later, Inter earned their only win in September, beating Udinese 3–2 thanks to a goal from Davide Frattesi, who put the Nerazzurri in front after 43 seconds, and a brace from Lautaro Martínez that ended his goal drought with the club.[29]
October
editOn 1 October, Inter defeated Red Star Belgrade 4–0 on matchday 2 of the Champions League. After Çalhanoğlu opened the score in the first half with a free-kick, Mehdi Taremi provided the assists for Marko Arnautović and Lautaro Martínez, before scoring his debut goal for the club from the penalty spot.[30] On 5 October, a hat-trick from Thuram granted Inter a 3–2 home victory over a 10-man Torino.[31] Back from the second international break, on 20 October, Inter secured a 1–0 victory against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, courtesy of a strike from Lautaro in the second half.[32] Three days later, in the Champions League, the Nerazzurri struggled away from home against Swiss side Young Boys, grabbing a 1–0 victory thanks to a stoppage time goal from Thuram.[33] On 27 October, Inter faced Juventus in a high-intensity match that ended in a 4–4 draw. The goals for the Nearzzurri came from Zieliński, who scored a brace from the penalty spot, Mkhitaryan and Dumfries.[34] Three days later, in the last match of the month, Inter beat Empoli 3–0, courtesy of a double from Frattesi and a goal from Lautaro. This was Martínez's 134th goal for Inter, making him the top foreign scorer in the club's history, surpassing István Nyers' previous record.[35]
November
editOn 3 November, Inter defeated Venezia 1–0, with Lautaro scoring his first Serie A goal at San Siro since 28 February.[36] Three days later, the Nerazzurri faced Arsenal on matchday 4 of the Champions League. Inter won the match 1–0 thanks to a penalty kick from Çalhanoğlu at the end of the first half of the game. Inter put on a put on a convincing defensive performance, with the Gunners attempting 20 shots without scoring.[37] On 10 November, the Nerazzurri failed to surpass league leaders Napoli, drawing 1–1 after a powerful strike from outside the box from Çalhanoğlu,[38] who later in the game also missed his first penalty since November 2016, ending his streak at 19 successful efforts.[39] On 15 November, German centre-back Yann Aurel Bisseck extended his contract with the club until 2029.[40] On 23 November 2024, Inter obtained a dominant 5–0 victory against Hellas Verona, with all five goals coming in the first half. Joaquín Correa opened the score, followed by a brace from Marcus Thuram and the goals from Stefan de Vrij and Yann Bisseck.[41] On 26 November, Inter defeated RB Leipzig 1–0, thanks to an unlucky deflection from Castello Lukeba that led to an own goal.[42] This was Inter's fifth clean sheet in their first five Champions League games, a task only accomplished by Juventus in the 2004–05 season, and by Manchester United in the 2010–11 season.[43] The following day, Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries officially renewed his contract with the Nerazzurri until 2028.[44]
