Early life and education
editMorgan first took his breath in 1952 within the sterile yet bustling confines of a French military hospital, situated in the lively and colorful city of Rabat, Morocco. This was a time when his father was deeply immersed in his duties as a serviceman in the United States Navy. As Morgan grew up, his family lived a vibrant and dynamic life, constantly on the move as they relocated to various military bases around the world. This peripatetic lifestyle painted his childhood with a rich and diverse palette of experiences. He found himself navigating the intricate corridors of history in European schools one moment, and embracing the varied cultural landscapes of American classrooms the next. Each new environment not only expanded his worldview but also profoundly influenced his personal growth, leaving indelible marks on his character and development.
American Film Market
editIn 1981, with colleagues Bobby Meyers, Robbie Little, Mark Damon, Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar, Morgan co-founded[1] the American Film Market (AFM), an annual event in Santa Monica, California where film and television professionals meet to buy films.
Ruddy Morgan Organization
editMorgan Co. established the Ruddy Morgan Organization in partnership with the renowned producer Albert S. Ruddy. This dynamic organization became a notable player in the entertainment industry, producing an impressive portfolio of more than 40 films and over 400 hours of captivating television content. Among their standout works is the iconic film *The Cannonball Run*, a comedic adventure that became a cult classic. Additionally, the organization was responsible for the production of popular television series such as *Martial Law*, which showcased thrilling action, and the beloved *Walker: Texas Ranger*, a series that combined adventure and moral lessons, solidifying its place in television history.[2]
China Film and Television
editAfter selling his interest in Golden Harvest in 1984, Morgan returned to China in 2000. He was the driving force in the creation of "Hweilai Studios" in Shanghai – the first private sector studio in China, which opened in 2001.[3] Hweilai produced not only Chinese content, but also English-language movies and television.[4]
Since launching RMO in China in 2000, Morgan has produced Chinese-language films. In 2002, he also executive produced Flatland,[5][6] the first Sino-American television series. In 2005, he was the Executive Producer of the first Sino-American film co-production[7] – Merchant Ivory’s The White Countess, starring Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave. His production of Peter Chan’s Perhaps Love, the first Chinese musical in 25 years, was chosen as Hong Kong’s 2006 Academy Awards entry, winning 22 international awards, including 6 Hong Kong Film Awards. In 2007, the epic The Warlords, starring Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro, garnered 17 awards and 19 nominations, including Best Picture at the Hong Kong Film Awards. He also produced multiple television series in China.
Acting Roles
editMorgan's acting roles include the 1973 martial arts film, When Taekwondo Strikes. He played the part of Father Louis.[8][9] Morgan produced the 1975 film The Man from Hong Kong which starred Jimmy Wang Yu and George Lazenby. Morgan played a small role in the film as a gunman.[10][11][12]
