Leading Leiri to highest league finish
edit"Mourinho impressed with brief but successful managerial periods at Benfica and União de Leiria, taking the latter to their highest ever league finish. " It's not accurate to describe him as leading Leiria to their finish when he left so early in the season (Jan 23). Could this be removed or changed to say that he left them at such a league position before leaving.

- I agree, unless a manager is with the team for the whole season it can be very subjective for a manager to claim the team's league finish as a result of their performance. Listing the league position when he left is most objective but may be too detailed for the lede. 2607:EA00:107:1801:492B:2455:FAD:D4D3 (talk) 17:08, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

In Media attention and controversy section
Amend to read
In February 2014, Mourinho referred to rival Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, calling him a "specialist in failure."[167] Wenger responded to Mourinho's comments in an interview days later, calling them embarrassing to both Chelsea and Mourinho himself.[168]
Current wording implies he called him perhaps on the telephone - not the case as was a press conference

Liverpool offered managerial position to Rafa Benitez
editThe following is said in your article: "Liverpool offered their managerial position to Rafael Benítez and Mourinho instead accepted a large offer from Roman Abramovich and pledged his immediate future to Chelsea". This is a misleading statement because it implies that Liverpool rejected Mourinho when this is not the case. Mourinho chose Chelsea over Liverpool. Mourinho was appointed Chelsea manager on the 2nd of June 2004. Here is the link to prove it: http://www.chelseafc.com/news/special/jose-mourinho--manager-of-chelsea.html. Rafa Benitez was appointed by Liverpool on 16 June 2004 according to your own article in Wikipedia.Pakipak786 (talk) 06:33, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

editFrom Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section: As a general rule of thumb, a lead section should contain no more than four well-composed paragraphs and be carefully sourced as appropriate.
Currently it has five paragraphs, and the fourth one contains too much information is too big. SLBedit (talk) 00:56, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

In the 2003-04 Porto sub-section under the Managerial career section

Jose Mourinho is NOT the English Premier League Manager of the Month for August 2016.
editJose Mourinho is NOT the English Premier League Manager of the Month for August 2016. Jose Mourinho actually won the polls on twitter but that counts as only 10% of weighting votes. Confusing
editThe Benfica section begins, "in September 2000...Mourinho moved up from his role as assistant manager at Benfica to replace manager Jupp Heynckes". But the previous section ended with Mourinho still at Barcelona. The article needs to bridge that gap. Also, the quote beginning "When I spoke with Van Gaal about going back to Portugal" seems to refer, not to when he picked Carlos Mozer as assistant coach, but to the time years before, when Van Gaal came to Barcelona and Mourinho stayed there with him. Again, in the 2003–04 season section, there is a paragraph about Alex Ferguson and Manchester United followed by a quote about Liverpool. It's all very confusing. 95.44.50.222 (talk) 11:18, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Transfers
edit"In the same year, he also became the first coach to have spent more than £1 billion on transfers." 1) Coaches do not spend money, that's the reason why it is called "manager". 2) Managers as coaches (except for rare exceptions) only exist in Britain, so the sentence as a general statement does not make sense as other coaches in the world are not able to spend money, they have to work with what the general manager or sporting director (or however you call it) gives them. It should either be clarified that this is about British managers, or if it should also be compared to the rest of the world it should be changed to "sporting official" as other clubs in other countries do not necessarily have a post called "manager" and definitely not "coach". --SamWinchester000 (talk) 18:17, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

In the 2009-10 section it says, " Inter went on score more than 30 goals before the end of November" there needs to be a "to" after "on". Gygesfc (talk) 20:29, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

editIn the Honours section, there's an entry which says 'Longest Football Unbeaten Home Run by a Manager (9 years)'. The associated reference points to an article on chelseafc.com, but the article has moved. Or perhaps the address given was incorrect. Anyway the link address in the article is http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2015/08/mourinho-makes-guinness-book-of-records.html, but it should be https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2015/09/04/mourinho-makes-guinness-book-of-records. Sacked or departed Man Utd?
editThere is an edit war over whether Mourinho left Man Utd or was sacked. According to an authoritative neutral source https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/46603018 Mourinho was sacked. Do other Editors agree? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.254.78.162 (talk) 14:53, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
- What's the difference? "Left the club" is not a value judgement and goes along with what the club said. "Sacked" is just a colloquialism for "he doesn't have that job any more" anyway. – PeeJay 15:08, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
- There is a big difference, with the same number of words we can convey to the reader whether Mourinho was made to leave (sacked), left by mutual consent, or chose of leave (resigned). What the club says is not a neutral source, but the most authoritative source we have, the BBC, say that Mourinho was sacked so we should convey that information to the readers.
- Regarding BBC, when mourinho left Chelsea, BBC published an article saying he was sacked, but Chelsea FC posted a notice on their site clearly stating the words "left by mutual consent", so whom should we believe?? Daiyusha (talk) 13:24, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

lead section (much) too long
editWikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Lead_section recommends maximum 4 paragraphs, and mourinhos lead section is more. it contains details making it difficult to quickly read about this person. @PeeJay2K3:, any reasons why it should stay at the current lenght? --ThurnerRupert (talk) 17:28, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- If the sheer number of paragraphs is the issue, I think I've fixed it. – PeeJay 17:33, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- I've done a copyedit of the lead section. My biggest issue with your changes was that you removed practically all references to his admittedly uneventful playing career. – PeeJay 17:49, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
cool thanks! @Kind Tennis Fan:, @Davefelmer: please make it shorter, not longer. take a look at other coaches like Franz Beckenbauer, Louis van Gaal, Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola (also on the too long side imo), Jürgen Klopp and others. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 11:13, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- Guardiola's has significantly more than four paragraphs. Beckenbauer has more as well. Mourinho currently has three and I think its fine. Removing his achivements to cut down space would be the wrong approach. It fits within the guidelines at present and really shouldnt be meddled with anymore. Davefelmer (talk) 19:47, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- Why would you even bother trying to justify the length of the lead section in this article by citing other longer ones? Obviously those articles need bringing into line with the MOS too, rather than trying to maintain the unwieldy length of this one. – PeeJay 21:47, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not using those to justify this one, the lad himself highlighted how the recommended length for the lead is four paragraphs, and Mourinho's page has 3. Davefelmer (talk) 02:06, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, but it had five until I sorted it out. If you have problems with specific changes I'm making, don't edit war, just raise them here and we can talk about them. – PeeJay 11:44, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
- Sorry, been busy over the holiday season but checking back in now. There still appears to be a few things wrong with the article where important info is excluded or is just wrong. His second Portuguese league title in his second season at Porto absolutely must be included as its the biggest national honour he could win at the time. Again, reads like it's written for English fans who would recognise the CL but not care about the local domestic championship. Secondly, he didnt not win a trophy in his final year at Madrid as you wrote, he won the Spanish Super Cup. Furthermore, it seems like a lot of his achievements are set up to build to a failure where it is constantly stated how he 'won x and y, but was then sacked' when it should be more about the achievements like it is for other managers, achievements which often were historic to the club in question. The Copa del Rey is again excluded which makes no sense as its a huge honour and he beat Pep's Barca in the final, and likely his Community Shield with United should be re-added as it was very important to him and he frequently referenced it, making it part of his story. I dont quite get why your new version is up as it stands anyways, as the old version existed for ages and there doesnt seem to be any consensus on the changes. Surely the status quo should have remained before a new article was established as suitable by multiple parties. Davefelmer (talk) 19:57, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
- Not sure I agree with you. The lead is only supposed to give a brief overview of the subject, not a deep dive. You make it sound like I'm trying to whitewash those honours out of his history entirely, but I'm just trying to condense it down to the most important info. Sure, this isn't perfect yet, but reverting to the previous version would be even worse. Feel free to work in the Copa del Rey, but super cups don't really merit mentioning in the lead. – PeeJay 01:22, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
- Certain honours just shouldnt be whitewashed though. His second Portuguese league title seems to have been removed while his League Cups in England are featured, despite the Portuguese title being a much more prestigious honour. I dont want to rework it to the previous version but some things listed are just incorrect, such as him winning nothing in his final year at Madrid which is factually untrue. Its in cases like these that super cups should of course have merit and be included, as that would correct the statement. His Community Shield with United is also probably important as its a big part of his story at the club for him as he constantly referenced it in press conferences, interviews, etc. They only take like 5 extra words to add.

- A bigger issue is more so the fact that parts of the lead seem to be written in an extremely negative style, with most of his later career achievements followed by a 'but' and then undermined, leading to the actual achievements taking on secondary importance within the sentence. Its so needless, and not really consistent with other articles to write that 'he won x but then got sacked' and 'he won this but then won nothing and got sacked' instead of looking at the actual body of work relative to the club. I've amended some of those. It'd be like if for instance Arsene Wenger's article had 'he won the league unbeaten in 2004 but that was to be the last title of his career and he'd end his Arsenal stint with only 3 league titles in 20 years' or instead of referencing his successive top 4 finishes, it'd have said 'he won the FA Cup in 2005, but then failed to win another trophy for 9 years, a period characterised by the selling of key players and fan protests as the club gradually fell out of title contention'. Davefelmer (talk) 23:36, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
- This isn't about whitewashing honours, it's about giving due weight to the ones that most people will care about when looking for an at-a-glance summary of his career. Those honours are mentioned further down the article (or at least they should be!) so there's no need to include an exhaustive list here. As for the negative tone, unfortunately Mourinho has attracted negativity throughout his career and his successes have often been followed by comparative failures. This is reflected in the article. – PeeJay 08:32, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

Mourinho not a great manager

The idea that he is one of the greatest managers is seven years out of date (the references are from 2014). Since then he has been fired three time, leaving all three clubs in rancour and disarray. Uditisch (talk) 05:34, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
- Question: hmm... what do reliable sources say about him more recently? ‑‑Volteer1 (talk) 08:23, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

@Uditisch: Just because he has not had recent success, doesn't mean his status as a legend in Porto, Chelsea and Inter can be erased, nor does it hide his exemplary career and his 20+ trophies across multiple countries. Its not even a contest, he's still one of the all time greatest managers. https://www.givemesport.com/1682590-guardiola-ferguson-mourinho-the-greatest-30-managers-of-all-time-have-been-ranked This is the latest source I could find, Jose is still in the top 10. Name pronunciation
editI noticed that someone (presumably a Brazilian wiki user) has misidentified the pronunciation of José Mourinho's name given in the article as "Brazilian Portuguese" when in fact there is nothing ostensibly Brazilian about it; it is exactly how a fellow Portuguese would pronounce his name. In addition, I assume that Brazilian Portuguese is not to be considered (paramount) when dealing with an European Portuguese speaker as is the case with Mourinho. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Henriquebraganzza (talk • contribs) 03:36, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
