The lede
editThe latest edit created an incomplete sentence in the lede. In trying to fix this, I noticed a few weaknesses, so I took a shot at re-writing/re-arranging the paragraph. One problem centers on the argument over counting this as Dylan's 16th studio album (which doesn't need to be revisited). A previous opening said "is the sixteenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and The Band". It may be Dylan's 16th but certainly not Dylan's/The Band's. Another more recent edit, which had been reverted, took care of this, leaving the following:
- The Basement Tapes is an album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and The Band. It was released on June 26, 1975, by Columbia Records and is Dylan's 16th studio album. The songs featuring Dylan's vocals were recorded in 1967, eight years before the album's release, at Big Pink and other houses in and around Woodstock, New York, where Dylan and The Band lived. Although most of the Dylan songs had appeared on bootleg records, The Basement Tapes marked the songs' first official release.
I'm comfortable with this, except I would drop "featuring Dylan's vocals" in the third sentence, which seems out of place or at least would need "with the Band's backing" for completion and style. Simpler, however, to drop it since it's also somewhat unnecessary...pretty much "a given". But have your own go at it if you disagree. Allreet (talk) 16:05, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- In re-reading this, I get why "Dylan's vocals" was included - to clarify the mess made by Columbia - but still, the reader won't get it, thus leaving an ambiguity, which leads to a style problem. So I'm going to have another go at it. But as I said, change what I do if you believe otherwise. Allreet (talk) 16:24, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
