- I'd really like to, but exams etc always seem to be around when their numbers peak. Alan Fletcher (http://tassiebirds.blogspot.com/search?q=sandpiper), has lots of photos though, and has released CC-BY-SA content before if you are stuck. I have a (quite crappy) picture of a shining bronze cuckoo if you'd like it (http://img37.imageshack.us/i/img5916t.jpg/). I've also got a crap yellow throated honeyeater (File:Lichenostomus flavicollis.jpg), which is an endemic if that is of use. For what its worth you should try and make sure that the Tasmanian endemics are represented well with pictures in the article. I've got crappy striated and spotted pardalote pictures. The one time I got really close to a Forty-spotted Pardalote my camera battery went flat (on Maria Island). I see black-headed and strong-billed honeyeaters periodically (even occasionally from the windows at uni), but no photos yet. Noodle snacks (talk) 04:05, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Lenses again....
editI gotta quote of ~$950 for a Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro lens from a shop in Sydney. Is this okay or can one be gotten considerably cheaper another way? I am happy to go with it if it is an ok deal. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 06:51, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- You might get marginally better ordering from Adorama for example, but not much to offset the warranty convenience it would seem. The only other thing worth considering is second hand, I got my own lens for maybe $500 USD in that fashion. Noodle snacks (talk) 06:58, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- Cool - okay, so I might save a bit. PS: The canon repair bill for my 17-85 mm lens is $177. Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:59, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- Ouch on the lens front. this might be $500 or so to get here. You'd loose some focal length but it leaves plenty of money for flash and/or tripod. One of those is pretty much required for good results with macro. Noodle snacks (talk) 09:25, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry but thought I'd add my 2c. If budget is the issue, NS is right - better to get the cheaper macro and spend the rest on the macro flash. That's what sets Muhammad's (? not sure if he uses macro flash or just bounced regular flash) / Fir's / NS's macros apart from most IMO - It's the lighting control. Also, I've got the Canon 100mm and can vouch that it's excellent - makes a good telephoto portrait lens too. Ðiliff «» (Talk) 10:56, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, that is what I was trying to say, though I do mean just say a 430ex etc over a specific macro flash (like the MT-24EX). Noodle snacks (talk) 12:28, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- I have a tripod somewhere in my cupboard, and will see how it goes. I have a little room to move with money and toys (I just ordered the sigma lens...) - I was just musing on this while driving and seeing a tiny (1mm) jumping spider leap around the dashboard of the car :) Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:39, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- It is worth pulling the tripod out when photographing plants and stuff, it generally won't be of help with insects though. Noodle snacks (talk) 08:11, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Dunno if you've seen this- perhaps you could provide an edit of the real original and then nominate for delist and replace? J Milburn (talk) 23:38, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- I guess I promoted the image < 1 minute after Raeky suggested that on the nomination page! I second his and J Milburn's suggestion. It'll be much easier to D&R than it would have been to leave the nom open with possibly 3 choices. Cheers, Makeemlighter (talk) 23:44, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- I just uploaded an edit from the original over the top. I'm not sure if you can actually notice the difference quantisation error/recompression wise. It should be nearly exactly the same, so no need for a D&R imo. Noodle snacks (talk) 01:34, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Sorry about Phylidonyris pyrrhopterus male.jpg
editI wish we could've come to a fair compromise, but it seems certain users' stubbornness and pride won't allow them to do that, and I wasn't the only one who felt the way I did. I know it's not your fault for the background coloring, and all I asked was for less of it and more of the bird you worked so hard to capture, but now a very good image that you say took 6 days to capture now just, as far as FPC, goes to oblivion.
Still, keep up the good work, I'm sure you'll have more features again in no time. --I′d※<3※Ɵɲɛ (talk) 17:45, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- I can't afford a 500mm F/4 IS or similar that would blow out the background as you describe (and also make getting close enough much easier) unfortunately. But no worries anyway. Noodle snacks (talk) 08:37, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

- Hi NS,
- Love your photos, but there is an error in the caption of your latest POTD (Lake Seal Mt Field NP). The rock type in the foreground is Dolerite, not 'Dolarite'. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 03:51, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed, I can't change it myself, but left a message at Talk:Main Page, so hopefully someone will see it. Noodle snacks (talk) 03:59, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- The error isn't actually on the Main Page (and I can't find your message on Talk:Main Page, or in its contribution history). The error actually appears in the Summary-Description section of the Wikipedia page File:Lake Seal Mt Field NP edit.jpg, which is a duplicate derived from the Wikimedia Commons page, at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lake_Seal_Mt_Field_NP_edit.jpg.
- I have now fixed the error on the Wikimedia Commons page, but this hasn't updated the Wikipedia page (which according to the note for Administrators is only a temporary page anyway, while the image is displayed on the Main Page). I'll copy this discussion to the WP page's discussion page File talk:Lake Seal Mt Field NP edit.jpg and see if it gets picked up there.Bahudhara (talk) 07:42, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Armillaria pictures
editHi Noodle snacks;
In addition to recommending replacement of your Armillaria FP with the edit you made, I also discovered a duplicate, File:Unidentified Fungi 5974 1.jpg, of the original image, now tagged for deletion. Having seen that you also uploaded File:Unidentified Fungi 5974 2.jpg and File:Unidentified Fungi 5969.jpg, I was wondering if there were duplicates of these, too, and whether you were planning on nominating either one of them, or had done so already (I seem to recall having seen them before - perhaps one of the duplicates?). Cheers, Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 13:04, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

An problem not related to Wikipedia
editHello, I'm a editor from zh.wikipedia. I appreciate your pictures very much. I notice that you use Canon EOS 400D and Canon EOS 450D to take some of your pictures. As I've just bought an Canon EOS set, I just wonder if you have once faced the so called ERR99 while using lens produced by factories except Canon? If I intend to buy a Tamron zoom lens, will there be a very tough problem with the compatibility? AlexHe34 (talk) 15:58, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- I use a few tamron and sigma lenses without problems. I'd just be wary of anything particularly old and second hand. Supposedly Tamron lenses have never had Err99 problems. Noodle snacks (talk) 22:09, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Possible FP...?
editFile:Bigbullmoose.jpg—great EV, large image size (3,090 × 2,386 px), PD, good composition no? Used as a lead image on a litteral ton of wikis. The fellow wandering in the right background could probably be cut pretty easily, if needed. Not claiming to be an image expert, so am asking you for advice (sorry if it is out of your area, just poking the first person I find :) ) ResMar 22:41, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, My guess is that it would be a bit too noisy and soft for success. Noodle snacks (talk) 01:11, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
- Eh, soft is bad? I kind of like it. Well, noise can be removed I guess, albiet not by me. ResMar 02:29, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
- By soft, I mean local sharpness, as opposed to contrast across the frame. You might say a lack of fine detail in another way. Noise can be removed, but not without the expense of removing more detail generally. I'm not saying its a bad picture, just that the technical details let it down as far as FPC goes. You can always try it and see for yourself. Noodle snacks (talk) 04:40, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Your photos rock!
editYour photos are amazing! You should put a section on your user page about your gear and general approach to photography. I just recently got a 7D and my photos suck compared to yours. Jason Quinn (talk) 05:58, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your compliments. I will probably buy a 7D eventually. I'm not that into maintaining gear lists, perhaps because it sends the wrong message about how important it is. If you are curious, most of my photos are taken with a 400D or a 450D. My 400mm f5.6, 180mm f/3.5 macro and 10-20mm see the most use. I also have 55-250mm IS and 18-55mm IS lenses, which are not bad, but don't get pulled out that often. I think the thing to really think about in most cases is lighting. A large proportion of my shots use off camera flash (I have three of them). Bird photos usually use fill flash, which can improve things dramatically. Landscape shots need thought as to the time of day. Noodle snacks (talk) 11:33, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. Photography is a recent new interest of mine. My landscape shots seem to turn out acceptable. My real interest is in bird and insects. My results are far below yours. Hopefully I can get better. Bye bye for now. Jason Quinn (talk) 01:48, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Help with editing
editHello, I noticed that you had helped Fir0002 edit some pictures for FP. I have just submitted a picture at WP:PPR here. However, I am bad at editing and can't do the shadows properly. I am wondering if you will be able to help me edit it? If you can, that would be great, if you can't, then I will understand. Thanks! – S Masters (talk) 02:20, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- Assuming the pitaya picture is from two real photographs, then just use those shadows. Don't fake them. It isn't within my photoshop skills to create more realistic shadows anyway. You might try a Gaussian blur on the shadow layer. Noodle snacks (talk) 02:48, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, they are from 2 real photos, but the original shadows are both different – The full fruit is taken upright, while I had to place the cross section lying down as it wasn't stable. As a result, the shadows don't match. OK, I will try to play with the Gaussian blur, maybe make it lighter. Thanks for your advice. – S Masters (talk) 02:52, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- Next time pierce the rear of the fruit with toothpicks to hold it upright. Noodle snacks (talk) 05:07, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip. I think I really need to invest in some soft boxes :) - S Masters (talk) 05:47, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- For this small scale stuff just make a light tent out of a cardboard box and some baking or tracing paper. No expense required. Noodle snacks (talk) 06:32, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

editHello
This is to let you know that File:Anopterus glandulosus.jpg, a featured picture you uploaded or nominated, has been selected as the English Wikipedia's picture of the day (POTD) for November 14, 2010. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited at Template:POTD/2010-11-14. This was rather rushed and is on today so if you want to amend the blurb or anything please notify WP:ERRORS or myself on my talkpage. It is a stunning image, regards If you have any concerns, please place a message at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day. Thank you!
Anopterus glandulosus (Native Laurel or Tasmanian Laurel) is a species of shrub or small tree in the family Escalloniaceae, native to Tasmania in Australia. It usually occurs as a shrub 2-4 metres high but may occasionally form a tree up to 10m high. The leaves are large, 7–17 cm long and 2–4 cm wide. The white to light pink flowers are about 2 cm across and occur during spring and often again in autumn. Photo: Noodle snacks

- Thanks. Having now seen quite a few Sunbirds your user name takes new meaning now! Do you have any idea what File:Aethopyga sp - Ang Khang.jpg is? Nothing matches in my field guide, but I'm guessing it is just a different subspecies of something. A scholarship would be really cool, counter systemic bias, and probably the only way to get photos from some of the more logistically difficult (read: expensive) locations. I know that the BBC film crews for Life, Planet Earth and so on have to hire private security in PNG for example. All very unlikely though I'm sure. If you are ever doing any off-shore surveys, or know any other researchers in Tasmania/Australia doing the same I'd be more than happy to tag along though! Bluetail photo
editYour photo of a bluetail is very nice, but it is a Himalayan Bluetail (brighter blue above, greyer below with limited orange on the flanks), not a Red-flanked Bluetail. Could you move it to that page, please? Wikipedia follows IOC, and IOC treat the two as separate species. Thank you! 217.206.228.6 (talk) 12:31, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks - they were not separated in my field guide. JJ Harrison (talk) 06:17, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

editYour photo of Greater Crested Tern. Require your pemission to use it,. Thank you.
editDear Mr Harrison,
I am at the last stages writing a small regional pictorial field guide on the wetland birds of Tamil Nadu, with text in Tamil language and English, side by side.
I wish to use your beautiful photo of the greater crested tern in your Wikipedia website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Crested_Tern_Tasmania.jpg
I will give photo credit and also wish to send you a copy of the book when ready, if you give me your address.
I shall be grateful to receive your permission to use it for this work.
It is rather difficult to send you money from my place for various reasons.
Please write to me at my email ID rbgrubh@live.com
Thanks you very much. Robert B Grubh Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, India — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rbgrubh (talk • contribs) 05:21, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
Hi there. There was an edit added fairly late in this nomination. I'd appreciate it if you could state a preference among the various edits so that I can figure out which one to promote. Thanks. Makeemlighter (talk) 04:34, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Now it is way too late, but if you will be around I think you might be interested in participating. Nergaal (talk) 04:19, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
- Yep, I'm aware of it thanks. I'm pretty inactive at certain times of year though - so I'd just get eliminated at those times. JJ Harrison (talk) 06:28, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Restitching panorama
editHi, While discussing a bug in this nominated for Featured picture panorama, some user suggest to ask you, as being skilled in this matter, if you mind to help with the problem by restiching the original photos or some other solution. If yes, I'm going to send the originals to you. Thanks in advance.--MrPanyGoff (talk) 09:02, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

is at FAC - we have been rejigging images and note discussion at Talk:Banksia_marginata#Worth_a_gallery_or_bloc_of_images.3F...did you ever take any interesting whole-plant shots? cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 22:03, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
PS: Let me know if you are ever near any of these places see pp. 4-5 where really big Banksia marginata have been reported. Casliber (talk · contribs) 07:53, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
- For 1. Not really - most of the examples around here are usually in thick brush - it is difficult to get shots with just one plant. For two, will do. JJ Harrison (talk) 23:15, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

editWe wanted to let you know that we've used one of your pictures in a project of ours: http://litpics.tumblr.com/post/5460543788/lit-the-canadian-portrait-gallery-volumes-1-to
We created a computer program to generate random pairings of sentences from public domain texts and public domain / creative commons images. Some of the pictures we've selected come from the Wikipedia Commons. All the pictures we select ourselves, but the pairings and the text are random. Of these pairings that are generated, we only post the most interesting combinations.
We welcome any feedback about our site.
Thanks for sharing your pictures,
Samantha and Patrick

Original Size of Images
editI was wondering, prior to putting your images on Wikipedia, what is their original resolution? King (talk) 00:42, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've used three cameras since I've been here, an EOS 400D, 450D and 7D. The original resolutions are 10 MP, 12 MP and 18 MP respectively (with aspect ratios of 3:2). That isn't the whole story though - bird images in particular are often cropped very significantly. Panoramas don't have such an easy answer of course. JJ Harrison (talk) 22:51, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- I appreciate the response, I was just wondering since many of the photos were set at a resolution of 1800 x 2000ish for the bird photos. Just a curiosity as it makes more sense to limit the size of a image on Wikipedia so it looks it's best rather than putting up a full resolution photo.King (talk) 18:04, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- That isn't the reason I do it - the full size quality is generally pretty good. JJ Harrison (talk) 22:03, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- If you don't mind me asking, then why are they resized? King (talk) 00:10, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- I don't feel comfortable with "giving everything away" when the occasional print etc can help subsidize the (high!) cost of camera equipment. JJ Harrison (talk) 23:02, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- Understood :), thank you. King (talk) 23:23, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Bicheno Seascape 1.jpg –- possible FP?
editI notice that this image is now used in an article, and so could be nominated as a FPC. I'd nominate it myself, but thought I'd mention it here first, in case you'd prefer to do a self-nom. NotFromUtrecht (talk) 10:59, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- Its pretty I guess, but it wouldn't pass FPC in my view. It needs to have encyclopedic value in order to do so, if that makes sense? JJ Harrison (talk) 11:14, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Help with Photography
editHi, I recently took up photography as a hobby, though was interested in it for quite sometime now. I have a Nikon D3000 with 18-55 nikkor lens. I sometimes feel that the images are not quite what I expected. Is it better to invest on Camera equipment (lenses) or better to upgrade to a better camera?
I am interested in Nature/Animal photography and have realised that 18-55 is grossly insufficient. Kindly advise.
Please revert back on my talk page if possible. Thanks Hariya1234 (talk) 08:17, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
I am still not sure about the metering part. I noticed that you've used contour metering in your Trinidad pics. I don't have that option. I normally use evaluative metering if the image doesn't have a huge contrast. Else I prefer to meter it at a specific point which normally leads to areas of over and underexposed. And frankly speaking, I don't enjoy using HDR or other techniques, infact, I am a total illiterate when it comes to using photo editing tools.
Just wanted to ask, Is it essential to learn photo editing tools? or can one manage without one?
I sometimes keep the image underexposed by two stops (in fact I do that most of the times) Can you guide me on this as well?
Thanks. oh! and requesting you to reply back on my talk page. Hariya1234 (talk) 17:17, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Hi, Would this stand a chance as FPC?♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:12, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Whilst the timing is pretty good I think the angle isn't perfect (a bit from behind), and the eye is out of focus. The white balance is too magenta too. You could always give it a go though. JJ Harrison (talk) 03:58, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
