Simple outline maps of countries, states, counties, cities, etc. like the one in File:WMFD TV 68.png are generally not considered creative enough to be eligible for copyright protection per c:COM:TOO US, and there are plenty of examples to be found in c:Category:Maps of Ohio and c:Category:Maps of the United States in logos; however, also proposing the file be deleted for poor quality is a different matter which is why I'm not going to deprod the file. If someone else, however, deprods the file, you'll need to bring it up for discussion at WP:FFD if you still feel it needs to be deleted or needs to be treated as non-free. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:13, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

File:WMFD logo 2024.jpg doesn't, in my opinion, need to be licensed as non-free; however, this can be discussed at WP:MCQ or WP:FFD if you feel otherwise. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:16, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

KSMQ and other stuff

edit

Hi, I’m coming at you to say that I’m new to editing and don’t how to properly fix things yet. Also, the date I always see for the launch of KSMQ-TV is September 25, 1972, not December 1971. Alo8000 (talk) 22:36, 27 November 2024 (UTC) Alo8000 (talk) 22:38, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Alo8000, I'm actually a little surprised. This year, we got the Austin Daily Herald in newspapers.com, so I went to look at the actual start date. My guess for first day of programming—not first day of a broadcast signal—is October 17, 1972 ([1]). This article is direly thin and needs referencing, but I want to wait until the Rochester Post-Bulletin is loaded in full in hopes that it will have additional coverage (this is in progress). Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 04:01, 28 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have found something further on this. The error is KSMQ's and dates to their late 2000s website, which gives a December 1971 start date. That station history also has the call sign year change to KSMQ incorrect (it happened in 1984, not 1985). You did, at least, prompt me to blow up and overhaul the whole article even before we got all Rochester paper. They won't be making mistakes like that again. @Sammi Brie: could you please explain to @Wamalotpark: that the unpiped links in the leads of San Diego TV station articles are just fine? I want to maintain consistency, while they want to do it their way. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 03:28, 24 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Actually, they are in the right if you read GEOLINK. San Diego is one of those special cities that doesn't take a state name in article (see "Major cities" in MOS:USPLACE). Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 16:42, 24 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

It looks like we are both editing. I had been dropping many of the wikilinks to towns that are not essential to the article., like Albany and Wilkes-Barre. Maybe you were putting them in? My idea was to make it more readable. Whaddya think? Ben (talk) 20:24, 31 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

The settlements mentioned aren't major enough to come up as overlinks (see MOS:OL). That said, I have no clue how this article was linking until last month to Burlington County, New Jersey (Special:Diff/1258468913), so pruning extraneous other links may still be needed. Is there a proper place in a station's article to mention it has a ATSC 3.0 host?

edit

Hi Mvcg66b3r, I see you reverted my good faith edits to WBTS-CD (and 4 other stations) that have ATSC 3.0 hosting by WUNI and WWJE-DT, example: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=WBTS-CD&diff=1270271672&oldid=1270254980

Is there a proper place to list this relationship anywhere else in the WBTS-CD article and the other 4? I find it very confusing to come to the WBTS-CD article and have no mention, in any section, that the station's primary channel is simulcasted in ATSC 3.0 by WUNI and WWJE-DT on Digital channel 27. How would a casual reader know to go to WUNI for this information if WUNI is not linked or even mentioned in the article? Thanks! Rocketwidget (talk) 20:08, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Sammi Brie: Your take? Mvcg66b3r (talk) 20:14, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Rocketwidget For most stations that have this sort of 3.0 relationship, there is usually a reciprocity. The Boston arrangement is not like that for every station. How does Special:Diff/1270279948 look? (Note: on WBTS, it's inside the labeled section so it also appears in the article NBC10 Boston.) Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 20:23, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Looks pretty good to me. Is a little more specificity allowed? I was thinking:
The NBC virtual channel 15.1 is simulcasted in ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV) format from the transmitter of WUNI on digital channel 27.[1] Rocketwidget (talk) 20:36, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Rocketwidget I think that's a bit jargony and dense, frankly. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 20:55, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Sammi Brie OK, I've made matching edits to WGBH-TV, WBZ-TV, WCVB-TV, and WFXT matching your format. Rocketwidget (talk) 21:15, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of KMID (disambiguation)

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on KMID (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because

  • it is a disambiguation page which either
  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • it is a redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" whose target is neither a disambiguation page nor page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. TiggerJay(talk) 05:06, 2 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Bearcat some intervention please. Abebenjoe (talk) 05:53, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
I was already planning on weighing in before I was pinged, @Abebenjoe (I watch this talk page). The template documentation of templates like {{Cite web}} does include a vertical version. It's not very common and I would personally avoid it (outside of something like a list-defined reference), and I bet that some userscripts that process citation templates might switch to inline parameters, but there is no MOS guidance prohibiting its use.
While I'm here, I was looking for the contribution that led to this comment and instead found the short description revert at CBHT-DT. The general take is that the network doesn't belong in the short description even though we did that at one point, so it should be removed. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 06:18, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
  • Firstly, no, you don't "own" pages, and secondly, your edits do not get special "do not touch" privileges just because they came from you.
    The short description at the top of a television station's article is not normally expected to include the television network that the station is affiliated with — "TV station in [City]" is what's expected, while "[Network] TV station in [City]" is not — so insisting on the latter is contrary to established practice, and is not a thing where you get to invoke special "expert" privileges since it's not an issue that hinges on "expertise" at all.
    And while vertical referencing is permissible, it isn't mandatory — it's fine if you're using the "list-defined referencing" format, where the references are defined at the bottom of the page while the body text just name-calls the list-defined references, but if the references are going directly inline then vertical referencing actually obtrudes into the basic readability of the page in edit mode, and makes it harder for anybody to add new material. So it's an option in certain circumstances, but it isn't an across the board requirement or a thing you're entitled to play the "inviolable because my edits are sacrosanct" card on.
    Again, your edits don't get special treatment just because they came from you, and one doesn't need any special level of "expertise" to know that the name of the network doesn't belong in the article's short description. Bearcat (talk) 15:27, 14 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

ANI

Hello, Mvcg66b3r,

Currently, you are a party in two separate disputes on the ANI noticeboard. That's rare even for more aggressive editors. Even if you are completely not at fault in either dispute, you seem to get yourself into divisive situations. I encourage you to try to deescalate conflicts that you encounter on the project and seek other dispute resolution processes besides ANI. It's important to just use ANI for "chronic, intractable" conflicts. Just a suggestion. Liz Read! Talk! 02:33, 17 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
