First ever Oxford Wiki Meetup

You are invited to the first ever Oxford Wiki Meetup which will take place at The Four Candles, 51 George Street, Oxford, OX1 2BE on Sunday 4 November 2012 from 1.00 pm.

I hope as many people as possible will be able to attend so that we can make this a regular event. If you have never been to one, this is an opportunity to meet other Wikipedians in an informal atmosphere for Wiki and non-Wiki related chat and for beer or food if you like. Experienced and new contributors are all welcome. This event is definitely not restricted just to discussion of Oxford related topics. David Jenkins

Are you sure David was a student at Queen's? I knew him well when he was Chaplain in the late 1950s and 1960s and I am not sure.Bduke 00:38, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

He is listed as a notable former student of The Queen's College, Oxford. According to his page, he was a student at Oxford, though his college is not stated. Unfortunately, Hephaestos (who added the information to the college page) has left Wikipedia, so I can't ask him for his source. Please feel free to correct if you have better information, since Wikipedia is my only source here. Pruneau

I think his page says he was a lecturer at Oxford. Someone, maybe Hephaestos, I think suggested that David jenkins should be moved from student to faculty on the Queen's page. I populated it using a booklet I was given at the lycée, which had a section on the History of Louis le Grand. It seems that the official website contains the same information. Actually, the templates from WP:Collaborations seem to belong on article pages (but only for one week, so templages like {Past AID} belong on the talk page). Why did you remove the AIDnom!?

See above, in reference to the article fan fiction. I do not understand why you removed the AID nomination note from the top of the Talk page, especially since from what I recall, it's not time yet for the vote to be tallied (I could be wrong, but it would be nice if you actually mentioned as much), and am of the opinion that removing the tag at this time WITHOUT addressing it AT ALL on the Talk page to explain why it was removed, either (I'm sure you had a legitimate reason, but it would still be nice if I didn't have to go to the page's EDIT SUMMARY to even see who removed it, let alone not even find an explanation for its removal, either), is not the best idea. Please explain your action, and next time, please explain why you've removed the notice on the Talk page of any article you remove such notice from, because I think avoiding this kind of confusion in the future is a damned good idea. :\ Runa27 20:18, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Don't forget to assume good faith. I was cleaning up Category:AID candidates, and fan fiction was listed there, but not on WP:AID, so I had every reason to believe that the nomination had expired. In fact, it turns out that User:Stovetopcookies had removed the nomination for no reason at all. I've readded the template on the talk page, added a new nomination on the AID page (I changed the dates so that the article still has a fair chance of getting 4 votes in a week), and I posted a notice on Stovetopcookies' talk page. Re your comment placed on the Malta article.. you thought the motto was part of the coat of arm. You wrote "when it is not". It was actually part of the coat of arm of Malta. Actually it was part of the National Emblem and Seal used during 1964-1975 see Coat of Arms of Malta, and for this reason I believe it is the motto. Also, I do recall, President Edward Fenech Adami referring to it as the motto, but there is no written proof, so its better to await an official reply from the Maltese government. Hi! Thanks for the help (and for teaching me a word, I'd never heard of "wikistalking" before!). While both links show how important the phrase is for the Greek, I don't think they show that the motto has an official status nowadays. From what I understood, the first link shows a flag used when preparing the revolution, and the second one shows the influence of the phrase on 19th century poets. Hector, it seems that Pruneau has a point. I am sure the contemporary motto of Greece is not 'Freedom or death' because there isn't any Greek who hasn't been freed (including these ...in a sick black humor sense). I'll search more, but I'd say that instead of 'motto' maybe we should use 'historic motto'. For what it's worth, the president (who is the one responsible for whatever is supposed to symbolise 'Greece', does not use it in his site at all). See here (and check the other symbols too).

On the other hand, we Greeks, were raised with that slogan. We had it in our textbooks, we were taught about it in school, we used it in all parades, we listen to it in the news and in every relative occasion. I am sure that even contemporary presidents/primers/defence ministers etc have used it in their speeches. I am not sure if 'Greece' would like to be known today as the country that has reasons to specify 'Liberty or death' though... So, 'historic motto' it is! •NikoSilver• 21:50, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Indeed, I don't know much about Iran, but I know enough state mottos, and finding a reliable source for the Iranian motto is not easy. I see you added the FIFA website as a reference; unfortunately, the FIFA website is not a reliable source. For example, it says that the motto of Cambodia is National harmony [3], when the constitution says it is Nation, Religion, King [4] (article 4). I suspect that FIFA took some of the mottos from Wikipedia, so we can hardly use their website to confirm information.

If you can find another reference, I'll be happy to accept it. I should note that I raised this issue on Talk:Iran#Motto, where the rationale for listing Allah Akbar is given: Article 18 of the constitution states that "The Official Flag of Iran is composed of green, white, and red colors, with the special emblem of the Islamic Republic, together with the State Motto.". The only text on the flag is Allahu Akbar. Mowens35 agreed on that matter.

There is a difference between your edits to Wales and Wangi's: you did change the motto at least three times [5] [6] [7]. These additions were reverted by User:Stemonitis, User:Snowded and User:Wangi. On the third occasion, Wangi posted a message to your talk page asking that you stop adding this motto, since it is the motto of the Prince of Wales, not of Wales (as explained by Snowded in his edit summary). The message you potsed to Wangi's user page, concerning multiple reverts, was therefore irrelevant. However, the template message he posted to your talk page is relevant, and you should therefore not delete it.

If you feel like requesting mediation, please go ahead, but I don't know what you hope to achieve. It is a shame that you thought Wangi's message was rude. I do not believe it was his intention, he was merely posting to wanr you that your behaviour could be seen as disruptive, and to give youa link to the policy page. It should be noted that the three-revert-rule applies to talk pages as well. Might I suggest that you read Wikipedia:Three-revert rule? You could be blocked for your multiple reverts.

As a sidenote, I am going to delete the motto you added for Itlay on the List of state mottos, since you didn't provide a reference, even though I asked you for one. Pruneau^talk 14:48, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

I am completely fed up with this. It feels like you are all ganging up on me. Wangi was rude in his tone and his reverts are unsourced. The "discussion" also took place on his page! The main article on Wales is not in line with "your" page and in any case I did not change it three times. I may have pressed the button more times than I should have and re-done it to correct a typing error/ layout but that is all. In fact the first time I re-did it was because I thought I hadn't saved it properly, but now I realise that you and your friends are constantly monitoring everything and changing things back in nano seconds! You are quite right about the notices: if you had replied on your own talk page, I would not have received an orange site-wide notice, but since I am watching your page, it would have appeared in my watchlist; you will not receive any notice about my replu here. It isn't possible to find out what is on another user's watchlist - see Help:Watching pages#Privacy of watchlists. The only way to be sure that another user sees your message is to post on their talk page. In some cases, this can be confusing (if two contributors post on each other's talk page, the conversation is split in two). Some users reply both on their talk page and on the other contributor's talk page, so that the entire conversation is present on both pages; others, such as myself, have a note at the top of their user page saying on which talk page they will reply. Having an incorrect version in the history is not really an issue, since no one can possibly be confused into thinking that the previous photo is the correct one. If you feel strongly about it, you could ask a Commons admin to delete the old version, but I don't think it's necessary (and I'm not an admin, so I can't delete it myself). I'm also reluctant to do the rename: a rename is quite a bit of work (the image has to be downloaded, re-uploaded under the new name, deleted by an admin, and all uses on all Wikipedias must be updated). One could even argue that having the file name without any diacritics makes it easier to reuse: the reason I uploaded it under this name was that I was using a keyboard that doesn't handle diacritics in an easy way, and that's probably true of many other people. Minor changes like this are somewhat discouraged by commons:Commons:File renaming, but you can do the rename yourself if you feel strongly about it. Pruneau^talk 18:21, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Language-population update project

Hi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{sigfig}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.
