Life on Campus
ESG shapes daily life at HKU, guiding operations, learning, wellbeing, governance, and research, embedding responsibility, care, and long-term thinking across campus.
Driving environmental stewardship, social responsibility, strong governance, transformative education, and impactful research throughout HKU.
Environmental
Students driving green change
HKU’s students play an active role in advancing environmental sustainability across campus. Through student led initiatives, campaigns, and collaborations, they promote environmental awareness, encourage sustainable lifestyles, and contribute ideas that influence campus practices.
Working in partnership with the University, students help shape conversations around sustainability, ensuring that grassroots energy and student perspectives are reflected in HKU’s ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact and build a more sustainable campus community.
For example, recently Greenwoods, a student run environmental society created meaningful change through student organised activities, campaigns, and peer engagement, successfully promoting greener lifestyles across campus.

Governance
Students and University, together
HKU’s governance model reflects a shared partnership between the University and those studying.
University leadership is acutely aware of the need to blend guidance with freedom, and tradition with innovation, and provides structured representation for students within key governing bodies, including the Council and the Senate, where academic matters, student welfare, and the University’s future direction are discussed.
Through these frameworks, student perspectives contribute directly to decision making, reinforcing a culture of collaboration, transparency, and shared responsibility within the whole HKU community.
Educational Programmes
Educating ESG-ready leaders
HKU advances its ESG ambitions through interdisciplinary education which equips students with the knowledge and skills to address sustainability challenges.
Courses such as Understanding Climate Change build scientific literacy and critical thinking, while programmes offered by the Institute for Climate and Carbon Neutrality and the MSc in Environmental Management integrate science, policy, governance, and practical application.
Together, these programmes prepare graduates to contribute meaningfully to environmental stewardship, responsible decision making, and sustainable development locally and globally.
Research
Advancing ESG impact
HKU supports a network of research centres which strengthen its ESG impact through interdisciplinary scholarship and real world engagement.
From climate science and carbon neutrality research at the Institute for Climate and Carbon Neutrality, to marine conservation at the Swire Institute of Marine Science, social sustainability research at the Global Society and Sustainability Lab, and health focused research within the School of Clinical Medicine, these centres generate evidence, insight, and solutions that inform responsible decision making and sustainable development locally and globally.
