Consider using a trellis, fence, or wall that can accommodate their growth and weight.  2. Prune and shape: To encourage a well-trained climbing hydrangea, prune it in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. You can also prune selectively to shape the plant and control its size.  3. Tie and secure: As the plant grows, gently tie the branches to the support structure using soft plant ties or twine. Avoid using anything that may damage the branches. Tie the branches loosely to allow room for growth and prevent constricting the stems.  4.
