Heimdall or Heimdalr, in Norse mythology, the son of Odin and nine mothers, the guardian of the gods, who lives at the edge of the world. His duty was to protect the rainbow bridge Bivrest, which connected Asgard with Midgard (the world of heaven and the world of earth), from the giants-jotuns.

The Norse Gods can be split broadly into two tribes - the Æsir, associated with chaos and war, and the Vanir associated with nature and fertility. The Gods are often considered together with the Jötnar (singular Jötunn) or Giants.
