Oklahoma's name is derived from 2 Choctaw words: "Okla" meaning people & "Humma" meaning red, literally meaning Red People. There are currently 35 tibes of Indians living in Oklahoma: the 1970 census shows an Indian population of 97,731, establishing Oklahoma with the largest Indian population of any state in the Union.
