Coastal territories face growing pressure to reconcile economic development with the protection of fragile marine ecosystems. Students trained separately in economics or in ecology rarely have the chance to test both perspectives together, on the same problem, in the same place.
When a European university alliance launches, the partnership agreement is only the starting point. What happens next depends on the academics who carry it into their day-to-day work, their courses, their research, their professional relationships.
Port 2000, Le Havre's deep water terminal, was built for the world's largest container ships. For one week in June, it became a classroom too, confronting how ports adapt to climate change and automation across engineering, law, geography, robotics and history.

Sunscreen chemicals, fish-farm effluent and shipping traffic all converge on the same narrow strip of Mediterranean coastline each summer. Under a microscope, a drop of neutral red dye stains the blood cells of a mussel. Whether the dye stays put or leaks out tells researchers something about the health of the animal, and by extension the water it lives in.
In Ponta Delgada, EUNICoast's Research & Innovation and Community Engagement commissions closed their June meetings with a shared set of deadlines: a doctoral school pilot moving into its consolidation phase, a skills observatory taking shape, and the first concrete link between the two commissions' work through 2026 and beyond.
EUNICoast is launching the 2026 edition of the Open Science Awards, recognising those who make openness of knowledge a daily practice. The University of the Azores leads the process, reaffirming its role in promoting open, verifiable science that benefits society.
