Trailer: The Club at Eddy's Bar by Zoltan Boszormenyi

The Club at Eddy's Bar by Zoltan Boszormenyi is published on 30 April by Phaeton Publishing Limited. It's written in English rather than translated. Zoltan Boszormenyi will join two other authors on the Euro Crime Hungarian Authors page.

"The Club at Eddy's Bar" by Zoltán Böszörményi with Hungarian Rhapsody, Ferenc Martyn drawing.

Here's the press release about the book and the author:
In the last years of the Cold War, the club at Eddy's Bar is a meeting place for the elite of an Eastern European city, especially those with more adventurous sexual tastes, which includes the apparently happily married mayor, several prominent lawyers and a hermaphrodite city administrator. When a young barber, who frequented the club and was involved with several of its members, is found brutally murdered and mutilated at the Hotel Odéon, many people have reason to be afraid.

A young journalist discovers the truth and is forced to leave his family and flee to Canada as a refugee, where he struggles to start a new life. He keeps the notebook in which he wrote his account of the crime, hoping to publish it if his family are ever allowed to join him. However, he finds that the people he meets in the new country are concealing as many dark secrets and lies as those in the old.

The Club at Eddy's Bar is both a gripping mystery and an intricate and involving tale of power, hypocrisy and betrayal.

Zoltán Böszörményi was born in the Hungarian community of Arad in Transylvania. While still a student, he published two books of Hungarian-language poetry. The second of these resulted in his arrest and interrogation by Romanian security officers. He fled across two borders and spent seven months in a refugee camp in Austria. He was admitted to Canada, where he learned English and graduated from York University in Toronto. After the opening up of Eastern Europe in the 90s, he returned and set up a successful lighting company in Romania. Now retired from manufacturing, he is Editor-in-Chief of a Hungarian-language daily journal and a monthly journal based in Arad. He has residences in Canada, Arad, and Monaco. In 2009 he received the Gundel Arts Award for the Hungarian version of The Club at Eddy's Bar, and in 2012 he received the József Attila Award for Hungarian literature. He is the author of two previous bestselling novels published in Hungary. He is married and has two daughters.

TV News: Fleming on Sky Atlantic

Fleming, starring Dominic Cooper as James Bond creator Ian Fleming has already begun showing in the US and now it's the UK's turn. The first part (of four) is on Sky Atlantic at 9pm on 12 February 2014.

I hope it's as good as it looks on the trailer showing on Sky. I can't find the same one online but the BBC America one is similar but with an added voiceover:

From the Sky Atlantic website:

There's no questioning the iconic status of the man they call 007, and Fleming explores how some of the real-life exploits of Ian Fleming became the inspiration for one of the most enduring and successful characters ever.

Untroubled by the spectre of impending war, roguish playboy Ian Fleming chases women, collects rare books and lives off the family fortune. Forever in the shadow of his brother Peter (Rupert Evans) and an eternal disappointment to his formidable mother Eve (Lesley Manville), Ian is finally given some direction in his life when he's recruited by Admiral John Godfrey (Samuel West) to help in the effort against the Nazis. With the somewhat sceptical support of tough-cookie Second Officer Monday (Anna Chancellor), Ian's extraordinary imagination and ability to spin a yarn makes him a perfect fit for espionage.

The stakes increase as Ian's chance encounter with the captivating Lady Ann O'Neill (Sherlock's Lara Pulver) becomes a passionate affair that shapes both their lives. Directed by Mat Whitecross (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and the BAFTA®-nominated Road to Guantanamo) and written by John Brownlow and Don Macpherson, Fleming captures both the opulence of high society London and the suspense and intrigue behind enemy lines.

While Bond fans will spot many a nod to the legendary agent, the series is ultimately a gripping account of a playboy spy and the woman who won his heart.

Meanwhile, the Darcy household are embroiled in the scandalous murder investigation which threatens to shatter everything they hold dear.

TV News: Trailer for The Spies of Warsaw (with David Tennant)

Alan Furst's The Spies of Warsaw is expected to be shown on BBC Four early in 2013 and BBC America in January.

It stars David Tennant and Janet Montgomery and is adapted by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. The supporting cast includes Ann Eleonora Jørgensen (Pernille from The Killing). From the BBC's website:
A thrilling spy story set in Poland, Paris, London & Berlin in the years leading up to the Second World War. French and German intelligence operatives are locked in a life-and-death struggle on the espionage battlefield.

At the French embassy, the new military attaché, Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier (Tennant), a decorated war hero of the 1914 war, is drawn into a world of abduction, betrayal and intrigue in the diplomatic salons and back alleys of Warsaw.

At the same time, the handsome aristocrat finds himself in a passionate love affair with Anna (Montgomery), a Parisian lawyer for the League of Nations. Their complicated love affair intensifies as German tanks drive through the Black Forest.

Two 90-minute film adaptations of one of Furst’s most acclaimed novels will bring to BBC Four a combination of historically located, intelligent narratives, interlaced with flawed, romantic and utterly compelling characters.

BBC America have released a brief trailer:

Trailers - Elite Squad & Villain

Ahead of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which is out in September, there are a couple more crime/action thrillers (released this month), one from Brazil and one from Japan:

Elite Squad (2): The Enemy Within

"A box office sensation in Brazil, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within continues director José Padilha's compelling and fiercely authentic account of the BOPE - Rio's special police battalion - in a fight against street crime where all bets are off. Set 13 years after the original, it's an unflinching glimpse of a country plagued by corruption on both sides of the law."

Out now in selected cinemas.

Villain

Based on the book Villain by Shuichi Yoshida, here thoughtfully reviewed by Bernadette at Reactions to Reading.

The film is due on out 19 August (UK).

Trailer - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

This looks fab, with a stellar British cast to rival Harry Potter and from the director of Let The Right One In.

"In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6's echelons."

Opens on 16 September, here's a not very spoilery (I think) trailer:

From the director of Pour Elle (Anything For Her), comes Point Blank which has its UK release on 10 June.

Everything is going well for Samuel and Nadia, his beautiful wife. He is studying to become a registered nurse and she is expecting their first child. When he comes to, his phone is ringing; he has just three hours to get Startet, a man who is under police surveillance, out of the hospital. Samuel’s destiny, now lays in the hands of Startet, a man who is not only wanted by the police! If Samuel wants to see his wife again, he has to act fast.

Here's the (fairly violent) trailer.

Trailer - Case Histories

Here's a teeny teaser trailer for the Jackson Brodie series based on Kate Atkinson's books and starring Jason Isaacs.

The six-parter series will be showing on BBC One shortly, I don't have the exact date but I'm guessing it'll fill the Sunday evening slot.

There is an interview with Jason Isaacs on the BBC website.

Trailer - Before I Go to Sleep

S J Watson's debut novel, Before I Go to Sleep will be published by Doubleday on 28 April. I have a glowing review from Lizzie Hayes to publish a bit nearer to the release date. Here's the synopsis and the trailer:

'As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me ...' Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love - all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may only be telling you half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.

Trailer - Knifer

Knifer by Ronnie Thompson has just been published by Headline. The trailer below is filmed in an actual prison.

Drug addiction. Criminal behaviour. Murder...and all before his sixteenth birthday. From foster home to children's home to living rough on the streets, Cain never had a normal childhood. By the age of 8 he was carrying a knife. Seven years later he was serving time for killing someone. Based on real events, ex-prison officer Ronnie Thompson tells Cain's shocking story and reveals what really happens to teenage offenders both on the streets and once they're behind bars. Prison riots, assaults on officers, roof-top protests and brutal acts of violence -- this is an inside account of life in a young offender's institute and of an angry young man spiralling dangerously out of control.

Trailer - Anne Holt on 1222

The 24 September edition of The Bookseller has an interview with Anne Holt, the Norwegian author of the Vik-Stubo series. A series I became increasingly fond of as the books progressed. In the last book (available in English), Death in Oslo, Vik and Stubo were joined by Holt's other series character, Hanne Wilhelmsen.

Holt's next book (in English), 1222, published by Corvus is a pure Hanne book and is the eighth in the series but Corvus have an ambitious plan to release the seven earlier books next year - the first time they'll be available in English - along with a re-release of the three Vik-Stubo books.

1222 is set in the real place of Finse and is a homage to an Agatha Christie style locked room mystery and will be published in December.

Trailer Thursday - Amberville

Amberville by pseudonymous Swedish author, Tim Davys is now out in paperback. It's the first of an unusual trilogy, as you can see from the blurb and trailer below:

Problem is, no one knows if the Death List really exists. Nevertheless, Eric gathers his old team together - sadistic male prostitute Sam Gazelle, sweet but dangerous Tom-Tom Crow, and wily Snake Marek - and they set off to find the elusive list. What Eric learns will forever change the way he thinks about his life, his family, and his town.
