Dave Newman
(???? –)
David J. Newman was a fan from Liverpool, UK active in the 1950s. He served on convention committees for Cytricon III and Cytricon IV and was on the programme committee for Loncon, the 1957 Worldcon. He belonged to the Liverpool Group and ran unsuccessfully for TAFF in 1958. Peter Weston described him as 'very visible on photographs from mid-fifties conventions, a chain-smoking genial-looking character with an air of authority and a distinctive handlebar moustache.'
Newman's first convention was Medcon in 1953 and he was a regular convention attendee through to Cytricon IV in 1958. The BSFA was formed at the latter convention and Newman was appointed chairman, becoming BSFA member M1 on the first membership list as shown in Vector #2 (Autumn 1958). However, #3 (Winter 1958) advised members to 'delete M.l. (D. J. Newman) who was originally listed due to a misunderstanding.' In his fanzine Prodigal in Summer 1958 he had announced that 'due to a variety of reasons' he would be moving to Bournemouth and he largely disappeared from fandom thereafter.
Newman did not attend the Brumcon of 1959 but instead sent letters to the BSFA committee detailing the various personal misfortunes since he'd relocated from Liverpool to Bournemouth that had caused him to drop out of fandom[1].
He clearly did retain some contacts thereafter as a change-of-address to Southampton appears in Skyrack #62 (January 1964) and a report that Newman had visited Ted Carnell and Ted Tubb in London in late 1963. Peter Weston tried to track him down in 2009, writing 'to every "David J. Newman" on the South Coast without any reply'[2].
