about

Time, in its many dimensions and in its relationship with musical form and practice, has always been the central theme of pianist and composer Fabio Anile's nearly thirty-year career.

The roots of this research lie in the early years of his career: the live looping and field recording experiments conducted in the mid-1990s with the ensemble enoLogica (1997–2002) evolved into a deeper exploration of time in its cyclical forms within the Looper's Delight Community, where Anile distinguished himself both as a performer - participating in international events in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy - and as organiser of the Live Looping Festival “in Rome” (2009).

His activities are documented in various collections published by the Looper's Delight Community (2005) and the Chain-Tape Collective, for which he directed the projects CT-Great Speeches (2006) and CT-Generative I and II (2009).

His experience as a looper has led to the publication of works such as Weightless (Laverna, 2011), in which synchronous and asynchronous piano loops are further fragmented electronically, and Resurfaced (self-released, 2014), based on long soundscapes, as well as collaborations with German experimental guitarist Michael Peters, culminating in the production of Presence (Audiobulb, 2019) and the EP Three Short Dialogues (2020). In all these works, looping – with its cyclical nature and expansion – becomes a tool for investigating time, in keeping with the best tradition of ambient music.

During this journey, Anile meets musicians who will profoundly mark his artistic evolution:

With Bernhard Wagner of Sonar, also a member of the loopers community, he discovers the Swiss minimalist movement of Don Li and Nik Bärtsch, and approaches the Thelevi, a Ghanaian percussion instrument capable of generating complex polyrhythms – a key element in the genesis of Minutiae.

His meeting with Stephan Thelen led to the release of Music for Piano and Strings (2023) and his participation in Thelen's recent Worlds in Collision (2025), as well as his integration into the Fractal Sextet project, alongside Jon Durant, Colin Edwin, Andi Pupato and Yogev Gabay.

This network of experiences and collaborations paved the way for Minutiae, Anile's first work released in collaboration with the British label RareNoise Records.

As the title suggests, it is a work built around a minimal rhythmic core that serves as a generator of complex structures. There is a certain continuity with the American minimalist tradition, but what makes this work even more interesting is Anile's profound melodic and harmonic sensitivity, which gives new impetus to the minimalist texture.

The album begins with a trio formation – piano, double bass and drums – gradually expanding into more electric territories (More Than 12, Shifting Trains), demonstrating Anile's versatility in moving between different musical territories.

Some compositions, such as Dance (already performed in a version for percussion instruments with the Mannheimer Schlagwerk, conducted by Dennis Kuhn) or Shifting Trains (whose bass line in 11/8 flowed into Stephan Thelen's Ladder to the Stars), testify to the organic and interconnected nature of his musical language.

Other tracks, such as Compás - a tribute to the rhythmic unity of flamenco music - Foglie Morte and More Than 12, offer a complete picture of Anile's poetics, enriched by the contributions of extraordinary musicians: Keith Lowe on double bass, Agostino Marangolo on drums and, once again, Stephan Thelen, Bernhard Wagner, Jon Durant, Samuel Hällkvist, Michael Peters and Fabio Trentini.

The long gestation of this work, which lasted over ten years, reflects the care and patience with which the artist refined each track until it reached its final form.

Minutiae thus represents a turning point in Fabio Anile's career: an agile, elegant and rigorous work that synthesises his reflection on time in its many polyrhythmic variations, combined with a profound melodic and harmonic mastery. A mature and luminous testimony to his art.
