“While a distorted economy leads us to treat human beings as mere merchandise, God becomes like us, revealing the infinite dignity of every person,” said Leo. “Where there is room for the human person, there is room for God. Even a stable can become more sacred than a temple.“

Oh yeah? How about the Catholic Church redistribute all its ill-gotten riches to help the poor?

Do as I say, don’t do as I do. As always…

I don’t know about where you live but in my town the Catholics run the largest food pantry. During this latest SNAP crisis they were crucial to the community. Sure there’s some hypocrisy somewhere I’m sure but there always will be in any collection of people.

What’s more important is instead of being cynical, to just get out there and help them yourself. Sure call it out, but in my experience a lot of folks that make statements like this are usually just on the sidelines not contributing.

Yeah and while some of their charity pushes their religion’s rules (adoption and hospitals are the big two), they aren’t like the salvation army who restricts who can have access to their food and shelters.

If you find yourself in actual need somewhere you don’t know what resources are available, a Catholic Church is one of the best bets for where find someone who can direct you to immediate relief regardless of who you are.

There’s more than some hypocrisy. Taking money that should be going to taxes and spending it on charity and pretending they’re some massive do gooder is not a good thing.

The money that they’re “taking” was given freely by partitioners to do exactly these kinds of things. It’s collective action for social good, just maybe not with the religion of your preference.

The Vatican helps fund many churches that still provide sanctuary for the poor and those on pilgrimage. As far as I know, most if not all will provide even for those not of their faith.

There are many things about the church and its past that are fucked up, but they at least presently do some good.
