Mastodon (and the wider Fediverse it is part of ⧉) is a non-corporate social network owned and operated by ordinary people and grassroots community groups. Here are the basics:
- To join Mastodon and the Fediverse, you need to sign up on a server.
- Whichever server you sign up on, you can follow people from other servers and they can follow you.
- If you change your mind later, you can move your account to a different server while keeping your follows and followers.

NOTE: Fedi.Garden manually checks each server’s rules and feed for red flags at the time of listing, and asks the admins to confirm they obey a specific set of rules about responsible moderation and technical reliability, but doesn’t have the resources to do a formal audit. Please get in touch if a listed server has done anything problematic.
