Old school hip hopilla tarkoitetaan aikaisinta hip hop -musiikkia (vuosilta 1979–1984), jolloin kyseisen tyylilajin pioneerit kuten Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa ja Sugarhill Gang loivat hip hopin perustan. Rap-musiikki syntyi, kun MC:t alkoivat räppäämään soul- ja funk-kappaleiden päälle. Ensimmäisenä hip hopia tehneenä DJ:nä pidetään jamaikalaissyntyistä DJ Kool Herciä.
