Today’s wheel setup, throwing batts cleaned and stacked, reclaim bucket tucked underneath, (awaiting the trimmings in the wheel-tray so they don’t get covered in water), and the radio on. Plates today, filler pots to make firing other vessels I’m creating easier, (less wasteful), thrown as simple flat disks from superbly soft clay, thick, unrefined, with practically all the work being in the turning stage. Lea Durie artist|maker|potter on Instagram: "Who likes a wonky plate? I’m going to show you a great way to turn plates on the pottery wheel. Save if you want to try this later. There are two main problems with turning plates. The first is the rim may have a slight wobble and if you turn it rim down on the wheel you just repeat the wobble. The second is that plates are fragile. Both the main flat area and the rim. Welcome the ring chuck. Made to be about the size of the inside of the plate this donut shaped ring will both protect the plate and the rim and allow you to turn with the plate base as the guage. Not the rim. Does that make sense? This one is made from clay thrown to shape. It’s kept dry and when I want to use it I just dip the base in water. Today I have been relaxing by getting through the mountain of turning I have accumulated! I have 10 small, 10 medium and 5 large hartley and noble batts and they are all occupied so I need to be making some room! 🚀🚀🚀

Believe it or not this is real time - I just love to go fast on the wheel but I really shouldn't 🤪💨

This is a speckled bowl but I also have birch and KGM clays on the go - this will make for some interesting reclaim! 🎚️🎚️🎚️

The builders are busy upstairs demolishing goodness knows what so I am channelling my inner calm, setting my control freak alter ego aside and trusting the process 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

This is my favourite stage of and really the part where your pieces comes alive. In order to be able to trim your pieces, you have to wait until at least the next day before being able to do so. As the clay dries up a little bit, it will get to the stage that we call leather hard. It’s at that stage that the trimming can be done, when the clay is hard enough to handle without distorting it but also soft enough to get excess of clay removed.
