Admiral Yi Sun Shin (1545-1598) is perhaps Korea's best known national hero. This man was a bright spot for Korea during the dark years of Japan's invasion, which lasted from 1592 through 1598. Admiral Yi never lost a battle on the sea against the Japanese, which kept them under supplied and under-reinforced. This helped to undo the rapid gains the Japanese made early on in their invasion of the Korean peninsula.
