December 25, 2024

Christmas Day.  We'd had our family get-togethers a little early, so not much else going on for me on a drizzly late December day.  Could have sought out some stocker trout somewhere in the St Louis metro area.  I've learned that Koi are also often willing to bite in the colder months, as long as there's no ice on the water... so I chose to try for some.  They fight well and can be very colorful, with sometimes interesting fin and scale patterns as well.

It started out very slow, with the water more stained than during my previous visit, and no fish visible at the start.  It picked up as the afternoon progressed.  I ended up landing 16 Koi and 3 Goldfish.  Below are some of them.

September 27, 2022 KOI

Went after Koi and Goldfish.  Had a good day.  Flyfished for 4 hours, caught 31 Koi and 17 Goldfish!

That puts me currently at 118 Koi for the year, and also puts me well over my goal of 200 Koi (lifetime on fly, although it only took 2 years), and just 2 Goldfish shy of a lifetime on fly goal of 200 Goldfish.  Pretty sure I'll surpass the Goldfish on Fly goal on my next trip for them.

Here's some of the more interesting Koi I caught:

Late December 2021

Xmas Eve.  Flyfished for Goldfish and Koi.

A chartreuse microjig under an indicator caught most of the fish.  A few others were caught on off-white.

Caught 16 Koi (exactly 100 for the year!):

(the fish bottom fish above is a recapture).

(below is 2 sides of the same fish, a recapture...originally caught July 28):

...and caught 8 Goldfish (87 for the year):

April 24, 2021

Flyfished in the rain for much of the day.  Creek was fast and muddy, so I didn't fish it.  Decided to try for Koi and Goldfish again.  The cold snap of the previous week (a couple days with lows below freezing, and snow) seemed to have put the fish down.  Few fish were seen.  Managed to make do, however, and eventually caught 3 Koi and 1 Goldfish.

Went to another place, caught a couple bluegills.
Tried a 3rd pond and caught largemouth bass, bluegills, crappies, a hybrid sunfish and a redear sunfish.
