"Numbers" issue

My 2011 Macbook pro runs on OS 10.12.6 Sierra. I use Numbers on my pro to handle all my financial records. Before going on vacation, I saved my current workbook to icloud so I could add to my expenses on my ipad. On returning home to the pro, I couldn't get into numbers - says I need to upgrade. My current system won't upgrade to the new numbers. An option pops up to download a "workable" older version with my system, but nothing happens when I click that download. Need help! Thanks
