Hi all,

I bought microsoft officer 2019 for my mac a few years ago on a personal licence & it now says I have to subscrive to office 365 to keep using it
Anyone have any idea how I can get round this as I"ve already paid for the licence?
Thanks in advance

I believe the latest stand-alone version is called Office 2021, at least that's what I use on my M4 MBA. So if 2019 is obsolete maybe see if you can get a cheap (or, you know…) licence for 2021 somewhere?

This is some BS error that is due to either an Apple OS update or an MS error. You basically need to reinstall Office 2019. I purchased through Microsoft and the able to login to Microsoft, redownload and install. I have had to do this on several Mac's (all individual, one computer licenses). You need to do a clean reinstall. and will need you licenses key.

Switch to LibreOffice and free yourself of Microsoft slavery.

You can do at least 90% of what you do in MS Office in LibreOffice (or OpenOffice).

In my opinion, getting sucked into the whole "subscription model" is stupid.

It is a LIE when software companies tell you that the reason they (now) charge you perpetually is because they are constantly improving their software. (How about release software that works the first time?)

Even if that was true, how much better can you really make a spreadsheet or word processor in 2025?

(It's like the fools who think they can cover "Stairway to Heaven" and do a better job than Led Zeppelin?!)

Would you pay a perpetual license fee for a ball-point pen because of future innovations that may come?

Free yourself from slavery, and go open-source!!!!

P.S. I have been using OpenOffice and then LibreOffice for the last 15+ years and haven't looked back. (Unless you are a developer building complex spreadsheets using VBA for Wall Street, OR you work for a law firm and do complex versioning, then you likely do NOT need MS Office...)

yes i purchsed a lifetime scanning software for a 1999 canoscan during Mojave and now i cant use that
they upgraded the cost, nd stoped supporting M series unless i repurchase.

my solution is to box that scanner (which is older than most members here)
and now on...scan via iPad.......viola~~

I do not think that is the case, you probably can use it but there is a slight chance it won't work on newer version of MacOS. Some software needs upgrading to work on newer OS.

you can buy offie 2021 for the lovely price of $40 on stacksocial website.

Excel is tough to replace, you get basic functionality.
Plus you do not need libreoffice on mac since IMO Pages and Numbers do a better job than libre (better GUI, easier)

Using LIbre you cant share documents since it saces in ODF format and most people are on Office. You can export to docx sure but its an extra step each time and formatting will go out of whack.

There is also FOSS OnlyOffice that use DOCX as their main format.

This is off-topic, but...
... don't say your scanner is obsolete until you've downloaded and tried "VueScan".

The message from Microsoft does not state you can’t use Office 2019 anymore, and it does not say you have to subscribe to Office 365 to keep using it. The message stated that support for Office 2019 is coming to an end (so no more software updates, security updates etc), the message even stated that you can continue to use Office 2019.

The message then suggested that you can either subscribe to Office 365 or purchase Office 2024 to continue support.

I will continue to use Office 2019, but will eventually look to get a discounted licence for Office 2024 in the future (or wait for another version of Office for Mac whenever that is released).

The price of $40 on stacksocial is for Office 2021 for a Windows machine (not a Mac). The Mac version is $60

Again, unless you are doing VBA for Bond Traders or working in a Law Firm, 995 of spreadsheet users will not notice a difference between MS Excel and LibreOffice.

Can't speak to Numbers, but the GUI for LibreOffice looks exactly like classic MS Excel.

Using LIbre you cant share documents since it saves in ODF format and most people are on Office. You can export to docx sure but its an extra step each time and formatting will go out of whack.

Hardly an big deal. Again, I have not seen any difference or problems going between MS Office (i.e. Word, Excel) and LibreOffice in 90% of cases. And have never had Microsoft users complain about LibreOffice when we interact.

I can't speak to what the OP is using MS Excel for.

At the end of the day, LibreOffice is FREE, so why not try it out? You might be surprised, OP, and get the same functionality without giving your $$ away to Microsoft FOR LIFE... ;-)
