TIL that you can have iOS/iPadOS learn the spelling of an unfamiliar word or name by typing it into Pages and when it comes up as misspelled tap on it to choose "Learn Spelling." This will add it to the dictionary used across the OS, so it won't appear as misspelled in other apps. (Seems more elegant than adding words as contacts or autocorrect shortcuts like I've seen online, unless there's some hidden drawback I'm missing.)

Why isn't this feature available in other writing apps? Is Pages using some kind of custom dictionary framework not available to developers? It seems weird that Pages is the gatekeeper of words being added to the system dictionary. Now that we have calculator and preview apps, maybe it's time for a dictionary app on iOS/iPadOS?

It would be nice to have the ability to add words in the settings app directly. I don't think there's even a way to remove the words added by your Pages method. It's just more poorly thought out Apple decisions.

It looks like you can "Unlearn Spelling" using the same tap method, but, again, only in the Pages app.
