Update indicator?

On my phone when I have updates, you get the number of updates in a small red circle next to the Apps icon. I do not get that on my studio. Is there a setting that needs to be changed? Thanks
 
By "updates" I'm assuming you mean "Notifications".
System Settings > Notifications (in the left sidebar) and you can turn them on or off per App.

My Mac is set to just automatically update, so I never see the number of update notifications waiting. But I suppose not everyone wants automatic updates turned on.
