I rather like darkness. It's the perfect milieu for hatching vain empires.

Now that I'm retired, I've decided I could use a few more hobbies. Of course, I'll start with a tabletop vain empire, or maybe a basement vain empire, and work my way up.

On my mind is why do they insist on such a large piece of surgical tape after a blood test? Pulling it off hurts 100x more than the needle.

Probably my wookie like coverings don’t help.
That reminds me of when I got a heart stamina test and they taped these monitors on my chest and back without properly shaving the spots they attached to first. The first one yanked off was a surprise. By the fourth, I was ready to attack.

Just had some blood tests. The covering was a ball of cotton wool and two (2) strips of masking tape. Removing the masking tape gave me a bigger bruise than the test. What's wrong with a little circular band-aid?

Totally unrelated, but we had a SPECTACULAR event tonight with all the big bands and the swing dance club. We were all sight-reading stuff. It was super casual though and mistakes were encouraged. We sounded surprisingly good though! It turned into a whole Salsa dancing thing by the end of the night, and almost the whole second half was just jamming on two chords (I played a lot of piano montunos). It’s a once-a-term event, so I look forward to the next one which I believe is in February.

Spent all evening transcribing the beginnings of Dave Weckl tunes. I’m kind of working on them all at once. Want to play them next spring with this band I’ve put together. I’ve got almost an entire big band horn section to work with (minus fourth trumpet, maybe I can recruit one more trumpet player).

I’m going to transcribe probably like 5 Weckl songs. I have a lot of time to do this, but that time will run out. We won’t do all of them but I want to have options. It also obviously depends on how many rehearsals we’ll get.

I’m also going to probably write one or two tunes as well. Very glad I took both small group and big band arranging classes because now I actually know how to put this all together.

Here in the US on the East Coast we don't have to worry about that until November 2nd.... I think they changed the date, which used to be at the end of October, because it was causing problems with the little ones going out at Hallowe'en to do the customary trick-or-treat thing that night. For whatever reason they adjusted the schedule, I'm happy at having daylight savings for a bit longer!

Yes, I remember it used to be October, and now its November. It's been a long time since the change, I think, but I'm not sure how long.

My mother liked using candles at dinner. The candle season always began standard time started, and it lasted until there was natural light coming in the window at dinner time. (Maybe mid-winter to late winter?)

I am a fan of earlier nights because I can usually get the kiddos in & to sleep a little faster/earlier thus carve out some extra me time for a quick read or other shenanigans. My wife says I’m a Viking and as such, enjoy playing in very cold weather. She is a warm weather, sun loving soul. So the onset of earlier nights and colder weather is (aside from grumpy joints) a welcome change for me :)

Books, (just read the excellent and disturbing The Hour of the Predator: Encounters with Autocrats and Tech Billionaires - by Giuliano da Empoli), the Irish Presidential election, and the fact that the clocks go back tonight, are all on my mind.

Perturbed by the amount of AI slop that is invading Youtube.

That, along with the exponential increase in advertising. Apparently, a 'long' video is now anything more than 8 minutes long (I think it used to be 30 mins.) and attracts a long advertising break.

Anyway, for those who need a little more joy in their life, here is a new interpretation of "Ode to Joy".
Enjoy

Now that storage and memory are ample on present-day computers, there isn't any reason to not run multiple browsers. So, you could try using the DuckDuckGo browser when looking at YouTube. It has a feature that blocks everything except the actual video from YouTube pages.

I've been using the DDG browser as my main browser on macOS, iOS, and iPad OS for a long time without any problems (I reserve Safari for regularly visited, trusted websites and use Firefox with a full set of privacy and security add-ons when randomly surfing).

AI slop, unfortunately, probably is here to stay. It's too easy to make and too popular with people who love social media memes.

Thank you for that, but unfortunately, we mostly watch Youtube on the TV, trying to keep up with what’s happening in the world.

Sponsor segments within videos have also gotten longer over the years. I was just watching a video from 10 years ago and the sponsor segment was only 15 seconds long. Nowadays they’re like 4-6 minutes long. Why?! Has the policy changed to require sponsor segments to be at least 5 minutes long or something?

Regardless, I pay for Premium (the only subscription I have besides iCloud+) so I don’t get the external ads, but I do still get all the sponsor parts within videos.

Generally, I think sponsors are quite stupid, but on the other hand it does make the creator some money, so…

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a YT video with a 6 minute long sponsor. But then I guess it depends on the sort of video or creators you watch.

We pay creators at work for using our products on various platforms. It can be a complete waste of money or very lucrative. It’s a bit of a gamble.

But if we are talking advertising that bothers me it’s those bloody Temu adverts you get on certain iPhone games. I just wanted to play a game of solitaire not be redirected to a Safari page to order some future landfill crap after watching a badly acted video for two minutes. Makes my blood boil. I wouldn’t buy a life jacket from them if I was on a sinking ship.
