Ork Warboss of the Bad Moonz Clan [Completed]

After some quick work on both weapons of the Ork Warboss, the Bad Moonz clan leader is now finally finished. Rather than dwell too much on what to do for the double-barreled bolter (can't remember what it's actually called) and powerklaw, I just did a fast paint-job to show battle damage, oil stains, grime and/or rust at what I felt were the appropriate places on both weapons.

Rust effects were confined to the powerklaw as it made sense that the Ork Warboss would leave some rust on the powerklaw's blades to effect gangrene on his victims.  That or his grot orderly is too lazy to maintain his weapon. In contrast, I did not put any rust on the bolter (except for a metal ring at the bottom) because I am assuming regular usage of the gun would have meant rust couldn't easily form on it. Instead, heavy usage would leave the bolter with oil stains and heavy grime ... just saying.

While the overall colour scheme is too garish for my taste, it does however fit the subject matter perfectly. One would assume an Ork Warboss would want to dress in such a manner notwithstanding the fact that it would have made him an easy target for those 'emperah' loving wussies.

One key positive I can take from this miniature is that I am getting more comfortable working with metallic and 'technical' paints. That being said I still think it's messy work that I could do without.

For the time being, I am painting the whole ork army in my possession for my son. But in the event he doesn't have any interest in tabletop gaming I would be tempted to sell my whole collection. Either way, it makes sense for me to paint it as well as I can. Next up will be an Ork Painboy and his assistant although your guess is as good as mine as to when I will start painting both of them.

Ork Warboss [WIP - Battle worn body armour]

Perhaps not entirely in keeping with the Ork Warboss's rather clean pants and loincloth, I had painted his body armour to depict battle damage e.g. paint chips on the yellow bits, verdigris on the brass or bronze bits as well as rust and grime on the pure metal parts. But in the grand scheme of things, I do like the overall look that it gives so I might still resist the urge to eventually dirty up his clothes.

I suppose you could say this particular Ork Warboss has an obsessive compulsive disorder when it comes to keeping his clothes clean. Let's just say many a gretchin has died to keep them spotless. That being said, the muted and drab colours of his clothes do make its cleanliness less obvious.

Although I have come to loath working with metallic paints, I must say I quite enjoyed giving them a battle worn look especially the light rust and/or grimed look prevalent on the exposed metal. It was a bit more of a hassle to paint battle damage in the form of paint chips on armour parts that are coated in yellow paint. That's one painting technique I need to work on to make the damage look realistic.

With the exception of the weapons on each hand and the base, the Ork Warboss is close to being finished. Both weapons will be painted in a similar fashion to the body armour i.e. a combination of brass/bronze/exposed metal/yellow coated metal with grime, rust and verdigris effects.

Ork Warboss [WIP - Non-metal parts]

Making surprisingly steady progress on my first W40K miniature project since the beginning of this year made me realise that I had forgotten how much fun it is to paint orks. They usually contain a good ratio of organic-to-metal parts as well as have many small details which make them a delight to work with. The Ork Warboss has all of the above characteristics in abundance so I'm a happy camper!

Latest progress on the Assault on Black Reach Ork Warboss comprise work done on the non-metal parts of the miniature which include among others the topknot, cable covers, clothing, bone etc. He will be painted in colours of the Bad Moonz ork clan so there will be more yellow yet to come.

Small details are wonderfully thought out e.g. teeth as a Warboss would be expected to flaunt his wealth

When I first started out on the hobby, this miniature looked very intimidating and I didn't have the skills to make a go of it. But now, I can at the very least make it look ... hopefully ... half-decent.

For his loincloth, I copied a 'Eavy Metal design which was used in a painting guide. Freehand painting of the flame on the loincloth were based more on the colours of the Bad Moonz clan rather than actual flames i.e. bright light yellows versus dark yellows bordering on orange.

Dusting off my W40K minis; Ork Warboss [WIP - Skin]; and a NIB Dark Vengenace Limited Edition set for sale

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, if that's the case then the first three photos below just about sums up the status of my Warhammer 40K miniature projects. They are either half-painted, semi-assembled or gathering dust though thankfully some are still in their packaging so the dust can be easily cleaned. But I guess now is a good time as any to dust some of them off - especially Orks which are my son's favourite - since I am trying to paint up a small Ork army to complement his rekindled interest in the Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II Retribution computer strategy game.

Enthusiasm for this Ork Trukk haven't really kicked off yet hence it's sad state

I wasn't in the mood to deal with a model which required metallic paints for most of its surface area so that ruled out the Ork Trukk. Instead, I looked at the very first W40K miniatures I ever owned i.e. the Assault on Black Reach (AOBR) box-set and decided to work on the Ork Warboss. Its surface area had a nice organic-to-metal ratio as well as many small details which suited me just fine.

Mixture of shadows and highlights on the mid-tone help define the arm's muscles

Citadel was the main acrylic paint line used to paint the Ork Warboss's skin. I went with various combinations of Orkhide Shade, Knarloc Green, Gretchin Green, Regal Blue, Bleached Bone plus use of Vallejo Model Color Oxford Blue to the mixture used to paint the deepest shadows.Working on the Ork Warboss gives me a cooling-off period from Le Petit Chaperon which in turn is helping me spot the mistakes I have made on her so far. One I have noticed already is highlights on her cheekbone where there should instead have been shadows. I am sure more will come to light soon.

Meanwhile, having come to the realisation (actually it's more of a reluctant acceptance) that I may never have enough time to finish painting all the W40K miniatures I currently own, I have decided to sell the extra set of Dark Vengeance Limited Edition in my collection. Having bought it for RM371 back when it first came out, I am now willing to sell it for RM305 to generate cash to buy some badly needed acrylic paints. Initially bought for a huge diorama project that has since been shelved, the condition of the box set is 'new-in-box'. It has the limited edition Dark Angel Interrogator-Chaplain miniature but also contains the older 6th edition mini rulebook hence the lower-than-retail price.
