About

This is a community package of Heynote, maintained independently. It repackages the official upstream Linux build.

One thing is added inside the app: a small preloaded library (LD_PRELOAD) that reports a fixed process ID to the tray code. Every Flatpak app runs as process 2 in its own sandbox, so without it the optional tray icon competes with other sandboxed apps for the same name and may not appear. The real process ID is still used wherever the system checks it, and nothing else is changed.

Heynote is a scratchpad for developers and power users: a large persistent text buffer for anything you need to jot down — a JSON response you are working with, notes from a meeting, a message you don't want to send by accident, a to-do list. Buffers are split into blocks, and each block has its own language, with syntax highlighting and auto-formatting.

  • Persistent, block-based buffers, several of them in tabs
  • Syntax highlighting and language auto-detection for over 30 languages
  • Search across one buffer or all of them
  • Math and calculator blocks, with currency conversion
  • Inline images, multi-cursor editing and spellchecking
  • Default, Emacs-like or custom key bindings
  • An optional global hotkey to show and hide the window

Updates are delivered through Flatpak; Heynote's own updater stays inactive in this package.

Buffers are kept in the app's own data folder. To keep them in a folder of your own instead — a synced directory, for example — grant access to that folder and then pick it under Settings, for example:

  • flatpak override --user --filesystem=~/Notes/heynote com.heynote.app

The global hotkey uses the desktop's Global Shortcuts portal on Wayland, so it needs a desktop that provides one.

Packaging

Modified
  • Injects code into the app

A small LD_PRELOAD library reports a fixed process ID to the tray code, because every Flatpak app is process 2 and the optional tray icon would otherwise compete for the same name. The real ID still goes out wherever the system checks it.
