Dyeing fabric with tumeric

Dyeing with natural ingredients is prime for experimentation. Even using well water rather than distilled water will change color permanence and shade. Different mordants—substances used to set the dye in fabric—also produce different results. Turmeric is a great natural dye for beginners. It yields a warm gold color on undyed natural cotton fabrics, silk and wool. A note of caution: The color will fade quickly if washed very often. Second in the series of natural dyes: yellow from turmeric!

What you need: about a half metre (a little more than half a yard) Linen Fabric (or try any white or light coloured 100% cotton fabric) Turmeric Coffee White Vinegar Large Pot (I used 2 cups vinegar, 8 cups water) This process preps the fabric so the dye will adhere to the fibres. Machine wash in cold water and dry before sewing!
