May 1954 sees Escher working on Rind. He was inspired by The Invisible Man, an 1897 science fiction novel by the British author H.G. Wells. In it, an invisible man can only be seen by means of the bandages that cover him. Escher changed the man into a woman. To…

In 1935, M. C. Escher created the above mesoprint entitled Hand with a Reflecting Sphere. The print is a self-portrait of the artist holding a ball-shaped mirror at arms length. A remarkable quality about the self-portrait in the spherical mirror is that no matter where the mirror might have been placed in relation to the artist, the eyes of the artist will always be in the dead center of the mirror. One of Escher‘s best-known images, this lithograph of two hands drawing each other presents several of the artist’s favorite concepts. Most notably, it is an example of what author Douglas Hofstadter has called a “strange loop,” a paradoxical system which continuously self-referentially repeats with no seeming beginning or end. Escher was fascinated by such paradoxical […] Escher Hands, Escher Drawings, Mc Escher Art, Gestalt Principles, Escher Art, Maurits Cornelis Escher, Drawings Techniques, Small Drawing Room Interior, Small Drawing Room

J.D. Hillberry's "Escher’s Nightmare" One hand is drawing the other - that hand is erasing its creator. Escher Hands, Drawing Wolves, Hyperrealistic Drawing, Drawings Techniques, Advanced Higher Art, Board Drawing, Ap Drawing, Hands Drawing, Pencil And Pen

This detailed charcoal and pencil drawing by award winning artist J. D. Hillberry is based on a drawing by M. C. Escher entitled Hands Drawing Hands. In my version, one hand is erasing as fast as the other can draw - making it an illustration of the old adage - one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.
