The big thing to remember is that it isn’t really all about the activities (good ones help) but rather the explicit teaching of routines in this time when we are transitioning into more focused literacy and numeracy play during these sessions. Making expectations clear helps the learning to occur as smoothly as possible for the remainder of the year. I can honestly say play sessions last year were a lifesaver & 100% necessary for the class I had. These initial week helped more than I could have known at that point. When we had to skip sessions for special (fun) occasions my class complained- that’s how much they loved and valued this time.
