Designed by Dave Cockburn~ Back in the 70's, when I was a kid growing up in the north of England, we carved turnip lanterns to celebrate Halloween. Not because we northerners were hard and didn't mind blistered fingers, more because pumpkins were fancy foreign veg that we hadn't yet encountered. Well, that's what I thought until an idle web search, while trying to avoid the news, revealed that turnips were the original lantern based on the old Irish folk tale of Stingy Jack, or…

I know I'm a day late! But on Halloween day I decided to do some folklore inspired art and it took me an extra day to finish :P Here is my version of Stingy Jack o' the Lantern along with it's folklore legend that inspired it!

Halloween fact #22 Jack O’Lantern is someone we closely associate with the traditional carved pumpkins of Halloween. However, his story dates back to ancient Irish myth and the character of Stingy Jack. He was said to be doomed to roam the earth at night due to a deal made with the devil. To light his path, he used to light coal and carry it in a carved-out turnip. When Irish settlers arrived in the USA, they realised the pumpkin offered a much better surface for carving.
