Marina Randall on Instagram: "Painting my vessels with clay (slips) is probably my favourite process of making these. I’m often inspired by places I’ve been to or scenes in my memory. I paint on to green ware and apply layers of vitreous slips using different techniques. Although the colours are carefully considered before applied as each one has to be mixed up to the right consistency first- the design and application is spontaneous. I like to capture an element of movement in the brushstroke. After the layers of slip are dryer I may add more layers, scratch, sponge, scr#marinarandallceramics affito some areas before the bisque firing . After that I may apply underglazes, resists and glazes. Watch this space for final firing 😊🌻 #contemporaryart #ceramicart #studioceramics #thrownanda Clay Painting Techniques, Decorating With Slip Pottery, Painting Pottery Techniques, How To Use Underglaze, Slip Decorated Pottery, Slip Ceramics, Slip Design Ceramics, Slip Painting Ceramics, Ceramic Painting Techniques

This mug has pink slip on it. After the slip dries on the mug, I begin laying out my pattern and then apply two layers of underglaze to each shape in the pattern. The handle and solid band on the bottom portion can sometimes require closer to 3-4 layers of underglaze since I don’t apply any slip on those area beforehand and also because I’ll sand them quite a bit after the all the firings are complete. It was so hard to squeeze all of these simple, but essential steps into a 90 second reel! I got down to the very last part in the painting process- which is adding col Underglaze Before And After, Slip Decorated Pottery, Overglaze Ceramics, Slip Decoration Ceramics, Slip Painting Ceramics, Underglaze Painting On Pottery, Pottery Cups Mugs, Underglaze Designs, Couple Reels

I have been creating, soda firing and documenting simple straight sided cylinders with a variety of surface treatments for examples for my classes and this blog. The original idea was to create demos to show students that aren't specifically "my pieces." The fun result of this project

Renee LoPresti on Instagram: "🟢Colored slip [mug bottom] patterns 🟢 . I know I’ve been a bit quiet for the past couple of weeks; I have been busy throwing and prepping mugs, planters and tumblers for the decorating phase! . Here I am using custom reusable die cut vinyl on leatherhard porcelain coffee mug bottoms. I like using a washable marker to mark where I want the slip to stop (and to ensure a perfectly centered circle). The vinyl is compressed onto the surface, and colored porcelain slip applied over the stencil. . Each design corresponds with how the sides of the mug will be decorated (coming up next!). This slip will become a more vibrant blue-green color when fired. Happy Friday everyone!"
