As I look out my window on this terribly cold day in late winter, I notice the cherry tree buds swelling, just waiting for the next warm day to burst open. Ornamental cherry trees are very popular in this area, mainly for their profuse blooming in early spring and their nice, shady canopy during summer. One of my favorite traits of the ornamental cherry is the silvery, thin bark. But then again, I am a plant nerd.

You might expect our garden plants to feel sorry for themselves at this time of year. On the contrary, look a little closer and you'll see all the signs of contented life.

Noted for its multiseason interest and spectacular mahogany bark, Prunus serrula (Tibetan Cherry) features a most attractive, high-gloss, coppery-brown bark, heavily banded with large, dull lenticels (bumpy lines). Shining like silk, the bark adds a welcomed splash of color to the winter garden. This round-headed small deciduous tree sports an airy canopy of narrow, willow-like, dark green leaves, 4 in. long (10 cm).
