The Veiled Lady - one of my favorite sculptures

Veiled figures, usually carved from marble, peaked in popularity in the 1700s. In the mid-1800s, several Italian sculptors revived this technically demanding tradition. As illusions go, they’re mesmerizing.

by Raffaelle Monti "The 6th Duke of Devonshire visited the sculptor's studio in Milan, Italy, on 12th October 1846 on his way to Naples. He ordered the marble sculpture on 18th October, placing a £60 deposit on the following day. The sculpture was ready to be dispatched to England in April 1847, and the Duke appears to have displayed it in Chiswick House, west of London. This sculpture belonged to the Cooper Family who lived in this building before it became an Art Gallery, but they bought the Veiled Lady to display in their country house, Cowick Hall near Goole in East Yorkshire. The sculptor is unknown, but it is probably by Rafaelle Monti (1818-1881) who worked in Milan, and was known for works of this kind. The Coopers visited Milan in 1879, but there is no evidence that they bought this sculpture there. The lady's face is very beautiful indeed.

Looking at Bernini sculptures because why not - a veil rendered in *marble* should be impossible, and yet...
