Not every AI interaction is best served by a frontier model. For a long tail of tasks, the intelligence exists, but serving it at acceptable latency and cost doesn’t. Engineers have to choose between model size and quality: as models got smaller, performance dropped off. Post-training closes that gap, but the current standard isn’t enough. Iterative post-training by using agent loops is what gets small models over the line, and today the activation energy to train is far too high.
