about

Welcome back, Simon Ellis! In case you’re late to the party, Mr. Ellis was responsible for one lone FAX salvo during the label’s 90s heyday, a dancefloor-dissolving slice of caffeinated trance released under the nom de disque Houdini. Now recording as Future Research Technology, he ably embraces the old maxim that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Well, thank the stars for that! Just when you thought trance should be relegated to the dustbin of monochromatic history, Ellis show’s he’s got a trick or two or three up his proverbial sleeve, and that the staid BPM of his elected (sub)genre can be more than mere black-and-white buttwag. We dare you to resist the molecularly-enhanced strobing DNA of pulse-pounder “Pronoia”, which could easily fit in a set brimming with Eat Static and B(if)tek sides and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them. As the album progresses, Ellis continues to warp our senses and sensibilities with surprise after surprise: “Zeropoint” eschews traditonal trance bit-mapping for a more elegiac form of globular trip-hop along the lines of Banco de Gaia; the fifteen-minute highlight, “Qubits”, will transform your inner ear canals via its percolating bass sequencers and post-90s dimensional deep-space dub. Likewise “Bioport”, except here its a sudden blast-off into the cosmos, Ellis pumping up the tempo and the volume with spiky Kraftwerkian beat splatters suffused with a modern burst of digital Hi-NRG. Ellis hasn’t just returned to form: this is some boss rhythmic razzledazzle for both brain and booty.

Future Research Technology Barcelona, Spain

UK born, Simon has been a record producer for more than 30 years. Having moved from the UK to Germany in 1991 and with the fall of the Berlin Wall 2 years earlier there was a strong sense of change in the air which led to many creative ventures one of which was the night clubbing scene which started for him in Frankfurt's 'The Omen' and 'Dorian Gray' inspiring many of Simon’s productions. ... more
